Former teen heartthrob Robert Pattinson is answering the call of the bat signal. Variety reports that Pattinson is going to be the next in a lineage of Hollywood stars to play “The Batman” in a 2021 film directed by Matt Reeves.

Sources tell Variety that the details are not completely finalized and when asked, Warner Bros. had no comment. The film is expected to start pre-production this summer.

At 33, Pattinson will be the second-youngest Batman. The first being Christian Bale who was 31 when he filmed “Batman Begins” which opened in 2005. At 33 Pattinson has stepped out of his “Twilight” teen idol persona by choosing more arthouse roles.

The newest director Matt Reeves is known for the Cloverfield series of films, and also directed the last two big-budget “Planet of the Apes” sequels. Reeves took over directing the Batman movies from Ben Affleck in January 2017 and has since been working on the project.

The staff change might be due to the box office disappointments of the last two DC comic movies: “Batman v Superman” and “Justice League.” Pattinson is also reportedly working with previous Batman director, Christopher Nolan, in an upcoming 2020 film according to Variety.
