Steve “The Crocodile Hunter” Irwin will forever be remembered as one of the most important animal rights activists of the century. Whether you are young or old, chances are you have heard of Irwin due to his charming enthusiasm and tireless efforts on behalf of the animal kingdom.

Tragically, Irwin died in 2006 after his heart was pierced by the barb of a stingray during underwater filming of a documentary. Irwin left behind a family that continues his mission of educating the world about animals: his wife Terri, his daughter Bindi, and his son Robert.

Robert recently made international headlines when he brought a snake to an awards ceremony.

Along with his mother and sister, Robert works at the Australia Zoo and brought one of its residents to the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Music Awards. Dressed in his father’s iconic khaki shirt and shorts, the 15-year-old Irwin had a large snake draped over his neck.

In an interview with Sky News Australia, Robert introduced the world to Larry the black-headed python. Robert joked that since he felt more comfortable at home wrangling animals at the zoo, he decided to bring the scaly guy with him to the awards ceremony. On a more serious note, Robert informed reporters that since the snake is a python, it is a non-venomous, beautiful animal.

When Robert presented the award for Best Male Artist, he asked if anyone wanted the chance to hold Larry and was happy when actress and singer Sophie Monk joined him on stage. Putting the snake on her shoulders, Monk did a brief impression of Britney Spears’ famous performance of “I’m A Slave 4 U” at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards before handing Larry back to Robert, reported Perth News.

Robert later chronicled his adventure with Larry on Instagram and Twitter, where his posts have already been liked over 50,000 times.

In other Irwin family news, during an interview last month with Good Morning America, Bindi hinted that she would be walking down the aisle with a koala for her upcoming nuptials to professional wakeboarder Chandler Powell.

What do you think about Robert Irwin bringing Larry the python to the ARIA Music Awards? Were you a fan of his father? Have you been following the Irwin family’s current efforts on behalf of animals?
