When it comes to the Marvel universe, it's safe to say that it wouldn't be the same without Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of the character Tony Stark, better known as the superhero Iron Man. Downey has suited up for the role for ten movies, starring in "Iron Man" and its spin-offs, as well as the "Avengers" series and other films in the Marvel universe. Downey is undoubtedly one of the most well-known and recognized actors in the business, and it's clear that talent runs in the family.

Born on April 4, 1965, Downey grew up in New York City and is the son of the late Robert Downey Sr., who was an actor and filmmaker. Downey's mother, Elsie Ann, was an actress. The younger Downey found success at a young age thanks to his father but was also introduced to Hollywood's darker and more tempting side as he was constantly surrounded by substances such as drugs and alcohol.

Downey went through several rough patches throughout his childhood and even in his career as an adult. However, he has time and again proven to overcome the odds and is still considered an incredibly successful man.

Downey has also had some ups and downs within his romantic life. He has dated Sarah Jessica Parker, was married and divorced to actress Deborah Falconer, and is currently married to producer Susan Downey. The actor has three children, including Indio Falconer Downey, who has proven to be very much like his famous father, following in his footsteps in more ways than one.

As an actor, Downey is best known for his work in the Marvel universe in films such as "Iron Man," "Avengers" and "Spider-Man: Homecoming." He has also been in a handful of other films, such as "Sherlock Holmes" and "Dolittle." While he is incredibly established in Hollywood nowadays, Downey had a rough start to the industry due to his dependence on drugs.

According to People, Downey's struggles prior to getting sober in 2002 were highly publicized due to his fame as an actor and as the son of Downey Sr. However, the actor worked hard at bettering himself. "Job one is get out of that cave," he explained. "A lot of people do get out but don't change."

Downey's struggles with addiction have cost him relationships and past jobs. According to Amo Mama, he and Parker started dating after working together on "Firstborn" in 1984. While Parker admitted that their relationship taught her "how" she loves, it also helped her understand the difference between loving someone and having to take care of someone.

Their 7-year relationship ended as Downey's addiction escalated. Parker explained, "The things that I ended up caring about, and the way I cared for Downey, were things that might be more suitable for a parent at a certain point." However, both stars were able to learn from the relationship and use those lessons for future partnerships.

Downey's marriage with his first wife Falconer ultimately failed after 12 years together, but resulted in the birth of his son Indio, who was born in September 1993. According to the Chicago Tribune, Downey has a tattoo of his son's name on his right shoulder.

Nowadays, Indio is proving to be very much like his famous father, following in his footsteps in the entertainment industry. However, like Downey, he has also faced struggles with addiction and arrests. According to People, Indio was arrested for cocaine possession in June 2014 and checked into rehab afterward.

"He's his mother's son and he's my son, and he's come up the chasm much quicker than we did," Downey said. "But that's typical in the Information Age; things get accelerated." He added, "Pick a dysfunction and it's a family problem."

Much like his father, Indio also entered the entertainment industry with the help of his family and began acting at a young age. He was in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" alongside Downey in 2005 but has since redirected much of his focus to music. In November 2004, a young Indio worked alongside Downey to release Downey's debut album "The Futurist." The pair worked on the cover art design and tracklisting label together.

In March 2016, Downey went to Facebook to share some great news about Indio and his career. The actor boasted Indio's sobriety journey and the new music he was releasing with his band, The Dose

Downey wrote, "Congrats are in order for my firstborn, and I'm proud to oblige. Having braved the crucible of addiction (and pleased the court), his ongoing commitment to recovery continues to inspire and amaze." He also commended Indio's "dedication, consistency and determination." It's clear that Downey is just as inspired by his son as Indio is inspired by him.
