Richard Gere is an American actor and producer known for his roles in films like “Pretty Woman,” “Chicago,” and “An Officer and a Gentleman.”
Richard is also a passionate humanitarian actively involved in causes such as AIDS awareness and the International Campaign for Tibet.
His journey into fatherhood unfolded at a late stage of his life. He became a father for the first time in his 50s. And while he’s greatly celebrated for his iconic film roles, Richard has always placed great importance on family.
It’s important to note that his rise to fame did not diminish his dedication to his children, where fatherhood became his source of fulfillment and responsibility. And his experiences as a parent reflect his commitment to these deep-rooted values.
Before becoming a biological father, Richard took on the role of stepfather when he married Carey Lowell in the early 2000s. Lowell’s daughter, Hannah Dunne, from her previous marriage to actor Griffin Dunne, became a big part of Richard’s life.
Richard didn’t experience any difficulties in his new role, later saying: “Being a stepfather was an easy ride.”
This experience was the stepping stone on his road to build his parenting approach, and it eased his earlier fears about fatherhood immensely.
This came as a shock to some fans as his ex-wife, supermodel Cindy Crawford, briefly mentioned that her marriage to Richard ended in part due to his reluctance to start a family.
However, it appears that his perspective on parenting had evolved by the time he married Lowell, and he had overcome his fears.

Richard first became a biological father in 2000 when he welcomed his first child, Homer James Jigme Gere, at the age of 50.
At the time, Richard was in a relationship with Lowell from “Law & Order.” The couple married in 2002. However, by 2016, their relationship ultimately ended in divorce.
Homer’s name carries sentimental value, honoring both his grandfathers, Homer Gere and James Lowell.
Upon hearing the news of his grandson’s birth, Richard’s father fondly recalled the moment he learned of Homer’s full name, saying:
“It was very sweet – and it made me feel good.”
Reflecting on Homer’s childhood, Richard described his son as “the joy of my life.”
Gere also noted that Homer was a fast learner:
“Pretty quick he learned irony, which is a wonderful quality for any human being.”
In a 2015 interview, Richard explained how he became more selective with his work so that he could spend time with Homer.
“If I have to be away for long, I talk to him about it, and if there is a problem, I don’t take up the project. Your family is more important than anything,” he said.
Although Richard kept Homer away from the public when he was growing up, he joined his father on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024.
In 2019, Richard married Spanish publicist Alejandra Silva. That same year, Richard became a father again at the age of 69. The pair welcomed Alexander Gere, their first son together. They later celebrated the birth of a second child, making Richard a father for the third time. He also became a stepdad to Silva’s son from a previous relationship.
Silva occasionally shares glimpses of their kids on social media, spending time outdoors and in the sunshine. However, their blonde and red-headed boys’ faces are usually obscured.
In 2023, when Richard faced a health scare, Silva was quick to comfort fans by saying:
“He is feeling much better today! The worst has already passed.”
From raising his first child to embracing new chapters of fatherhood later in life, Gere underscores his values of love, privacy, and the importance of family.
