Richard Gere's Wife Breaks Years of Silence With a Rare Look at Their Sons — and the Photos Have Fans Emotional

Richard Gere has spent decades as one of Hollywood's most recognizable faces — from "American Gigolo" and "An Officer and a Gentleman" to "Pretty Woman" and "Chicago." But in recent years, the man once described as one of the most photographed actors in the world has deliberately stepped out of the spotlight, trading Connecticut for Madrid, red carpets for school runs, and the pace of a Hollywood career for something he appears to value far more.

Gere, born Aug. 31, 1949, married Spanish publicist and activist Alejandra Silva, born March 27, 1983, in a secret garden ceremony in April 2018 after first meeting in Italy in 2014. Despite their 34-year age difference, the couple has spoken openly about the ease and depth of their connection. "The truth is, you're seeing us in our prime," Gere told Elle España following their 2024 move to Madrid, where the family relocated to be closer to Silva's roots. "Our kids are bilingual," he told Jimmy Fallon at the time. "They're going to flourish there."

Together, they share two sons: Alexander, born in February 2019, and James, born in April 2020. Silva also has a son, Albert, born in 2012, from her previous marriage to Govind Friedland. Gere also has a son, Homer James Jigme Gere, born Feb. 6, 2000, from his marriage to actress Carey Lowell.

For most of their children's lives, Gere and Silva have kept Alexander and James almost entirely out of the public eye. No posed photographs. No red carpet appearances. No social media presence to speak of for the boys. That changed — quietly, and in the most fitting way possible — on Mother's Day, May 10, 2026.

On May 10, 2026, Silva shared a five-photo carousel on Instagram marking Mother's Day. The post included what many fans immediately recognized as the first clear look at Alexander and James — two young boys who had, until that moment, existed largely as names rather than faces to the millions who follow their father's career.

In one image, Gere posed with all three of Silva's sons — Alexander, James, and Albert — the four of them shaping their hands into hearts for the camera. In another, Silva walked alongside her two youngest in matching yellow rain jackets, collecting flowers in the rain. Other images captured quieter moments: Albert playing with his younger brothers while Gere watched nearby. A selfie of Silva in a lush garden. Simple, unposed, and entirely deliberate.

Gere reshared the post to his own Instagram Story with a message directed at his wife:

"We love you!"

Silva's caption was a lengthy tribute to motherhood.

"Motherhood is the hardest work I have ever done, and also the most sacred," she wrote. "It asks us to be strong when we are tired, soft when the world is hard, patient when we are overwhelmed, and loving even in the moments when we are still learning ourselves."

The family has been based in Madrid since 2024. Silva has described Gere as "a very devoted and present father" who loves to read the boys stories. "He doesn't cook," she added. "I do it, but when I cook, he plays the guitar."

For a couple who have guarded their family's privacy with consistency, the Mother's Day post felt less like a departure and more like a gift — offered on their own terms, in their own time.
