Rhinoceros Mother Goes Through 488-Day Pregnancy To Give Birth To 123-Pound Baby At The Buffalo Zoo

The Buffalo Zoo is enjoying the first days of its newest resident.

Recently, a one-horned rhino named Tashi gave birth to male calf weighing over 123 pounds. The pregnancy lasted 488 days, a true testament to Tashi's strength and endurance. It is no surprise to learn that rhinos have one of the longest gestation periods of any kind of animal.

The zoo said on Facebook that this is only the third ever successful birth of a one-horn rhino conceived through artificial insemination. The zoo care team also said that both mother and baby are doing great and are successfully bonding with each other. The new baby has not yet been named.

This is the fourth baby calf for Tashi. This calf is also the second for Tashi conceived via insemination. These births are especially important in light of the fact that the IUCN Red List has designated the one-horn rhino as vulnerable.

The use of artificial insemination in animals is helping to save species such as these rhinos that might otherwise become extinct.

Tashi and her calf have not yet been unveiled to the public for viewing. It is important that they spend time together in a private setting so that they can bond before the public gets the chance to meet the sweet pair.

Now you can watch the miracle of life unfold in this amazing video. After you have watched Tashi give birth to the new baby, be sure to spread the video to everyone that you know who will enjoy watching this wonder. Hats off to Tashi for enduring that long pregnancy and delivering a healthy new rhino.
