Retired Military K9 Receives A Touching "Last Call" Salute

Sergeant Jason Spangenberg was recently forced to take Rico, his former partner, to the veterinarian. It was the last time Jason would have to take Rico there, the Dover Air Force Base reported in a statement.

Rico served the Air Force for eight years as an explosives detection dog. And he was great at his job. When he retired, he became the Spangenberg family pet. His passing caused sadness to the family and the many servicemen who experienced the pleasure of serving with Rico.

At Rico's funeral, 436th Security Forces Squadron members lined up to give a final salute to the dog. In the months leading up to his death, Rico suffered the effects of canine degenerative myelopathy. This degenerative disease affects the spinal cord and is very painful. Eventually, it became a chore for Rico each time he tried to walk.

The moment was heartbreaking for many and a radio alert was sent throughout the base regarding the commemoration. The alert instructed all patrols, posts, and cars to refrain from radio transmissions before offering tribute and hopes of a peaceful rest to Rico.

Rico was a bronze star recipient for assisting Jason on more than 100 missions in Afghanistan. During these missions, Rico found more than 100 pounds of explosives. The duo also helped to train 300 Afghan police officers on tactics to counter improvised explosive devices.

Jason and Rico were recognized locally for their stellar performance with a 'War Dog Memorial.' The memorial is located in downtown Dover and includes the likeness of Jason and Rico. The memorial thanked the duo for their efforts at keeping Americans safe and promised to never forget them.
