Respectful Boy Saves Teenage Girl From Embarrassment After She Got Her Period While Riding School Bus

Some men feel awkward whenever topics such as menstruation come up in casual conversations. Maybe it has something to do with society teaching men growing up that periods are disgusting and shameful, and should be mocked. Even in schools, kids are mostly taught that women excrete blood and tissue from their uterus along with the stigmas that come with it, for example, that menstruation is dirty. On top of the stigma associated with menstruation, women experience pain each time they go through menstrual cycles, and it’s something they cannot avoid.

Then again, the stigmas surrounding menstruation are something that can be reversed – and it all starts with parents teaching their sons that there is no need to feel awkward and be sensitive each time menstrual topics come up. It’s okay to be comfortable talking about it because it’s natural and happens to half of the world's population. It’s all about teaching men to show respect toward women – and one young person proved that good men still exist.

While some women keep track of their menstrual cycles, others do not see it coming. While it can happen anywhere, most adult women know how to handle these kinds of situations. Then again, it’s not always the case for teenage girls, especially if they are in the early stage of starting menstruation. There’s also a tendency for them to feel embarrassed if it happens in front of their classmates.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to a young girl while riding the school bus. But thankfully, a young boy saved her from getting mocked by other students on the same ride home.

In a Reddit post shared in October 2018, the girl’s mom narrated how the boy helped her daughter even though they didn’t know each other personally.

The girl had a leak on the back of her pants, but the young boy came to her rescue. After the boy had seen the stain on the girl's pants, he pulled her to the side. But instead of telling her about her situation out loud, he opted to whisper in her ears and gave her a sweater to cover the stain so she could walk out of the bus without people noticing it.

“My daughter started her period on the bus ride home today... and a boy a year older than her that she doesn't really know pulled her aside and whispered in her ear that she had a stain on the back of her pants and gave her his sweater to tie around her waist so she could walk home off of the bus,” the mom wrote.

The mom recalled how her daughter felt embarrassed over the situation, so she told the boy she didn’t need his sweater, but he insisted and proceeded to give it to her anyway. The boy explained that he, too, has sisters, and reassured the girl that she didn’t need to feel awkward or embarrassed.

“She said she was kind of embarrassed and originally said it's okay but the boy insisted and told her 'I have sisters, it's all good!'” the mom said.

The girl’s mother praised the boy’s mom for raising her son well. “If you are this boy's Mom. I want to say thank you and that you are raising him right!” the girl's mom said. She said she decided to share her daughter’s story because she wanted other people to hear positive news in the midst of all the negative stuff thrown at today’s youth.

“We hear so many bad things about today's youth, and I wanted to share something positive!” the mom remarked.

Meanwhile, several people shared their reactions to the mom’s story, with one person seconding the mom’s thoughts that there are indeed a few stories about the good that kids do these days. The same person added that there are actually several kids who are polite and respectful but often go unnoticed.

“I work in healthcare and see a lot of kids. I encounter very few teenagers who aren’t polite and respectful. A stark contrast to what you see online. There is a lot of good in the world. Too bad it can’t be conveyed online more often,” the person wrote.

Another person who grew up with two sisters said he felt inspired knowing there are still nice kids out there.

“Lovely story, I was the same growing up with two sisters. Gives you a tiny bit of inspiration knowing there are nice young people! I will say it's not necessarily the mum, could also be the dad promoting that behavior guys,” one person said.

Other girls shared their own experiences with boys coming to their rescue. “I fell off my bike once and this boy from school in my year helped me, I will never forget his kindness. I was so upset and my chain came loose,” the person said.

Meanwhile, other people noted the importance of sitting down with boys and talking to them about menstruation.

“This is why it is important to also teach young boys about menstruation. Growing up, periods were treated as a taboo subject that no boy should ever hear about and I doubt I knew anything about them,” the person wrote.
