Resourceful Adopted Dog Walks For 97 Straight Days To Return Home To Foster Mom

Seneca Krueger is a very special woman. Throughout the years, she has fostered 30 rescue dogs.

When Krueger took in Zelda as a foster, she knew she was a special dog. Although initially plagued with anxiety, the Shepherd mix eventually developed great trust for her new foster mom, and the two became inseparable. After spending two months in Krueger's care, Zelda went on to live with her adoptive family, 30 miles away from her foster home. Clearly, Zelda couldn't stand being away from Krueger; just one week later, Zelda embarked on a 97-day long journey back to her Krueger's home, where they finally reunited.

The Willis family was excited to adopt Zelda. However, a little over a week after they brought her home, Zelda went missing. They started to look for her. And Zelda's former foster mom Seneca joined the search, too.

She put up fliers with photos to help spread the word. Luckily, the campaign worked. Many people saw Zelda as she worked her way back to the place she considered her home. Every time she was sighted, it was clear she was heading for St. Paul, Minnesota, where Seneca Krueger lived.

Eventually, Zelda was spotted by an eagle-eyed neighbor just blocks from Krueger's home. According to KARE 11, they tempted Zelda with food and thus were able to catch her. After everything Zelda had gone through to reach her foster mom, everyone had to reconsider the arrangement.

While the Willises had legally adopted the dog, it was clear her heart wasn't really with their family. And though Krueger hadn't intended to adopt Zelda long-term, it was clear Zelda had more or less adopted her.

Zelda had decided who her family was, and all the people involved honored her wishes. Today, she and Seneca Krueger are living together again. And their unique story has inspired people around the world.

"I think that we believe that we choose dogs, but I really think it's dogs who choose us," Krueger told KARE 11. Clearly, that was the case for Zelda.
