While many may have their hopes up over apple cider vinegar, it is important to note that while it does have many benefits, these benefits are modest, so don't start saying farewell to your doctor just yet. However, it does appear that when used in combination with a healthy lifestyle, apple cider vinegar can have an effect on your health.

Most noteworthy is its ability to better regulate blood glucose levels, especially in people with insulin resistance. In a small study done at Arizona University State, dietician Carol Johnston found that consuming apple cider vinegar before bed positively impacted blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics, actually reducing their glucose levels up to six percent.

In other studies, according to Johnston, some researchers have found a link between consuming apple cider vinegar before meals and a lower post-meal glucose reading.

However, with the information currently available, she does recommend people use it as part of their salad dressing and/or diluting it in water and drinking it. She explains that the acetic acid within the vinegar prevents starch from being absorbed so rapidly by the body. Additionally, she warns not to rely on apple cider vinegar as your only method for managing blood glucose levels.

Surprisingly, another benefit of apple cider vinegar can be found it its ability to help with heart health. In fact, some studies have found some links between consumption of the vinegar and reduction in triglycerides, blood pressure, and total cholesterol.

Furthermore, could this vinegar be used to aid in weight loss and a reduction in cancer growth? One study found a modest effect on body weight when its test subjects consumed vinegar (not specifically apple cider vinegar). It showed on average that those consuming the vinegar lost about a 1/3 of a pound a week more than the control group. While this is a modest amount, it does show that perhaps apple cider vinegar could additionally aid in weight loss when combined with healthy lifestyle choices.

While these findings are quite remarkable, other benefits of apple cider vinegar are less noteworthy at this time. For example, when dealing with skin issues, spokespersons from the American Academy of Dermatology do not recommend apple cider vinegar for most ailments, aside from its use as an at-home treatment for bug bites.

As for its use for sore throats, most doctors do not recommend it and warn to never drink it straight without first diluting it, despite Hippocrates swearing by this remedy.

Lastly, while it has been repeatedly noted for its disinfectant properties, some studies find that it is not the best source of natural cleaning, and that it is just as effective as many other household products, like salt and lemon juice. In fact, according to some studies, if you are wanting it to disinfect the most harmful bacteria, you are most likely better off with other products.
