Every once in a while, dogs and cats get along fabulously. This was the case when rescuers came across an abandoned dog who had adopted a small kitten and was helping her stay alive by nursing her.

Michelle Smith, an officer from Anderson Animal Control, responded to a call about a barking dog.

When she arrived on the scene, she found the animal in a deep ravine close to a creek. She also realized there was a kitten with the dog. Neither animal had a tag or collar on.

She realized that the dog could have easily gotten out of the ravine by itself, but it appeared that the dog was reluctant to leave the kitten behind.

She even said it was possible the dog went into the ravine to save the kitten, as many animals have strong motherly instincts, even for other species.

After Smith brought both animals back to get the assistance they needed, the dog would not leave the kitten’s side. She only wanted to nurse and bathe her.

Smith said it was a beautiful thing to witness.

Volunteers decided to simply allow the animals to be together. The best part of the story was that the dog was experiencing a pseudo-pregnancy. She had never had puppies but her body believed she had, causing her to lactate.

However, the kitten still needed to be bottle-fed to stay alive.

They held both animals for 14 days to see if the owners would claim them. No one did, so they were both put up for adoption.

The named the kitten Kate and the dog Goldie after the mom-daughter celebrity duo Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn.

People from all over wanted to adopt the pair after seeing the picture on Facebook!

Even men and women from far away called and emailed about the famous pair. But the shelter finally chose the Harris couple as their adoptive parents.

They play and snuggle all day and night, even though Kate is now a cat. They will never have to worry about being left alone again!

The rescue and police looked for the person who abandoned them with no luck.
