A video of a rescue mission by Stray Rescue, an animal shelter in St. Louis, Missouri, gained national attention in 2017 when the rescuer was seen hugging a dog who was stuck in a sewer to comfort him before getting him out.

Dog owners know how much our furry friends mean to us; they are truly man's best friend. Dogs are fiercely loyal, unconditionally loving, and they will protect us to their dying breath should our safety be threatened.

Every so often, our canine companions give us a glimpse of the depth of emotion they truly feel, and if we respond appropriately to their outpouring of emotion, it can be an incredibly touching moment for us as well. Stray Rescue of St. Louis, Missouri got a call one morning in 2017 from local law enforcement authorities that a senior dog had become trapped in the city sewer system.

How he came to arrive at such an unsavory destination, no one knows, but one thing was clear—they had to get him out, and soon. Trained rescue staff from Stray Rescue arrived on the scene to hear the exhausted dog's cries and please for help. It was clear that he had been trapped down there for several days without fresh food or water, and his health was reaching a critical turning point if they did not get him out quickly.

Brave Volunteer Gets a Surprise

One of the volunteers from the Stray Rescue offered to climb into the sewer to collect the frightened, injured dog. As he descended into the filthy underground, he approached the dog with caution, not knowing if the dog's fear would cause him to lash out at his rescuer. He spoke soft, gentle words of comfort as he approached the dog slowly.

Canine Comforts

To the volunteer's complete surprise and delight, the dog came closer to him, whining softly. He approached the volunteer, nuzzling, and snuggling his head into the crook of the man's arm, clearly starved for attention.

In a gesture of genuine compassion and love, the man enveloped the exhausted dog with his arms and the two sat there, hugging and cuddling for several minutes before the rescue mission continued. It was a very sweet and endearing moment for both man and dog.

Two Lives Changed

Little did the volunteer know how much his actions were appreciated that day, but he also knew that his life was changed forever as well. Soon after the sweet and snuggly dog's rescue, he was reunited with his owner, who had reported him missing weeks earlier.

They had been heartbroken over the loss of their family pet, and when they were reunited with him on Father's day, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

We are incredibly grateful for volunteers like the ones at Stray Rescue, and we hope that marvelous works of compassion continue to play out for people and their precious pets all over the world.
