Rescue Shelter Makes Sure These Chihuahua And Cat ‘Best Friends’ Are Together Forever

While placement together isn’t always a certainty, everything possible is usually done not to separate human siblings in the foster care system. The same can’t always be said of pets who’ve been raised as siblings in the same home when they’re brought to an animal shelter.

In most cases, little thought is given to the emotional bond animals form and how separation would affect them. Thankfully, this wasn’t the case for Lelia and Kitty.

Meet Lelia And Kitty

Leila is an adorable two-year-old chihuahua, and Kitty is a sprawling six-year-old tabby cat. They grew up in the same home. Unfortunately, their family lost that home and weren’t able to find a suitable placement for the pair.

That’s how they ended up in the care of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) in Boston, Massachusetts.

The shelter, who says it’s rather rare for a cat and dog to come from the same home at the same time, immediately recognized the extent that the odd couple were bonded together.

Rob Halpin of MSPCA called it a unique case and pointed out that the agency couldn’t take away the one thing the two had left - each other.

In a CBS interview, Halpin described the love and friendship Lelia and Kitty share and how they draw support and comfort from one another.

So, the agency made a resolution to place them in the same adoptive home, and they launched a local media campaign to ensure it would happen.

In the meantime, MSPCA bent a few rules to ensure the two wouldn’t face any period of separation. While dogs and cats are usually housed in different units for obvious reasons, Lelia and Kitty were able to be housed together.

Now, it was just a matter of waiting for their forever family with a love of both cats and dogs.

It wasn’t a long wait.

Within just a couple of days of their media rounds, Lelia and Kitty found a forever family.

Lelia and Kitty have their happy ending. Have you heard of a similar animal story you’d like to tell us about in the comments? Don’t forget to pass Lelia’s and Kitty’s story along if it moved you.
