Renée Zellweger Slated To Star In Judy Garland Biopic

Judy Garland remains one of the most iconic stars of stage and screen. It makes sense that Hollywood producers would be interested in bringing her life to the big screen. However, some fans and Judy's own daughter aren't pleased with how a soon-to-be-released biopic is being handled.

This week, the trailer for the upcoming film Judy was released. Starring Renee Zellweger in the titular role, Judy depicts the Wizard of Oz star's life, focusing particularly on her final, troubled years.

Some fans are outraged that the first big film about their idol will focus on her tragic final years instead of focusing on happier times. In fact, Garland's own daughter, the flamboyant Liza Minnelli, has voiced her opposition to the movie.

"I do not approve nor sanction the upcoming [film] in any way. Any reports to the contrary are [fiction]," Minnelli wrote on her Facebook page in response to a fake news article stating she and Zellwegger had become close friends after Minnelli helped her with the role.

The film's trailer shows glimpses of a young and happy Judy Garland, but it also shows some ugly moments as well, such as Garland crying on the floor and having a glass thrown at her by an unknown person. The legendary star indeed had a troubled existence towards the end of her life, passing away from a barbiturates overdose at the age of 47.

However, a press release for the film insists that the script is sympathetic to Garland and portrays her as someone who was victimized by managers and producers who refused to take her wishes into account and forced her to perform when she wasn't healthy enough to do so. In light of recent accusations that the management team behind Britney Spears has forced her to do the same, the film feels timely.

Thus far, there has been no official release date set for Judy. While some die-hard fans remain skeptical that this project will depict their idol positively, others are hopeful that producers will portray Garland's struggles in a manner that's sympathetic and fair to the late icon. Only time will tell if Minnelli chooses to give this biopic about her mother a chance.

Does this film strike you as being in poor taste? Do you think it's unfair for producers to show the struggles of Judy Garland when she's no longer here to defend her own legacy? Let us know what you think about this project in the comments down below.
