Dec 10, 2018 by apost team

Are you not someone who looks forward to the holiday season? Maybe you have been doing it wrong all along. In an effort to do everything "right" we forget that the holidays are best enjoyed as a time of rest to get ready for another working year. Get these ten things out of your life this year and enjoy the season like never before.

1. A Dirty Home

Your in-laws walk through the kitchen and your husband's mother says, "Oh, your refrigerator is so dusty." Don't strangle her. Avoid this situation by cleaning your home. Even if your family isn't this neurotic, you will be more comfortable and at ease if you keep your home neat and tidy while you are finding space for your new gifts.

2. Jealousy

Imagine that you live in a mansion and no one else in your family does. Of course, since you have the biggest house, and can best accommodate a large number of guests, you are chosen to host the holiday dinner. Some people are intimidated by your home and suck up to you. Some of them are green with envy and passive-aggressive. What a terrible holiday! And you didn't even do anything wrong! You went out of the way to prepare your home for guests.

The worst part is that these are your family members. They're supposed to be there for you when no one else is. Don't be that person. Don't be jealous of what someone else has because it's entirely possible they worked for it and had no ill will or feelings of superiority towards you.

3. Not Letting Go

Are you still mad at your in-laws for something they said two years ago? You're making it harder on yourself. Nobody is perfect. Let go of grudges. If you truly can't, you shouldn't feel pressured to participate.

4. Perfectionism

You have no one to impress. It's important you understand that if you want to have a good holiday season. You also shouldn't have too many expectations about what the holidays will bring. You may have good times or bad times and there is only so much you can do to control it. Trying too hard to have a perfect holiday will always result in an imperfect one.

5. Eating Too Much

During the winter some of us have Thanksgiving and Christmas. Eating is a huge part of these holidays. We have a tendency to overindulge, thinking we are making the most of a short moment. No matter how long we can extend the pleasure of eating, it isn't worth the discomfort and sickness later. It's also important that you don't over-drink. Emergency room visits increase from 25 to 50 percent after the holidays because of people over-eating and over-drinking.

6. Shopping

Have you ever bought something just because it is on sale? It is easy to justify it to yourself in the moment. "Oh, I may need this later," you say. Now, how many times have you actually needed something you bought on sale? Be honest. If it isn't too many, consider staying out of the department store this holiday season.

7. Obligations

You get invited to Secret Santa. Your family wants you to visit. And now your partner wants to see a movie with you. Stand up for yourself and say no to the right things. Your time off isn't about pleasing other people.

8. Traditions
