Release Of Prince Harry's Memoir 'Spare' Reveals Major Bombshells

Jan 10, 2023 by apost team

Ever since officially leaving the royal family, Prince Harry has made it his mission to be transparent with the public about the difficulties he and his wife, Meghan Markle, experienced within the institution. Their sharp criticism of the royal family's culture in the now infamous Oprah Winfrey interview of 2021 was met with some opprobrium around the world, but the couple also found a lot of support.

The couple also embarked on a journey to document their lives since their departure from the grand halls of Buckingham Palace in the Netflix series “Harry & Meghan.” The show chronicles the pair’s progression from the “secret, early days of their unexpected romance” to marriage in May 2018, as well as their experiences under intense public scrutiny. It also delves into their relationships with members of the royal family and the impact and strains the institution has put on their life together.

Since relocating to Montecito in Santa Barbara, California, the Sussexes have been busy setting up their own brand, Archewell. Meghan began hosting a podcast called “Archetypes” that “dives into the labels that try to hold women back,” while Harry has been working on his memoir, entitled “Spare,” described as being “full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.”

Harry's memoir was finally released on Jan. 10, 2023, and it's clear the prince has no intention of holding back when telling his story. He gave multiple sit-down interviews ahead of the book's release, and finally, we know the kind of family secrets it entails. Read on to learn more about the biggest bombshells in "Spare."

Prince William Allegedly Struck Harry

The Guardian released an early excerpt of "Spare," which detailed an alleged physical altercation between Prince Harry and Prince William. In the excerpt, Harry wrote that while at Nottingham Cottage, his older brother physically assaulted him after he called Meghan "difficult" and "rude":

"(William) set down the water, called me another name, then came at me. It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.”

King Charles Referred To Harry As The "Spare"

The title of Harry's memoir, "Spare," has a deeper, rather sad meaning. The prince revealed that he learned at the age of 20 that after he was born, King Charles told Princess Diana shortly after Harry's birth:

"Wonderful. You have given me an heir and a spare. You have done your job."

Harry And William Asked Charles Not To Marry Camilla

It seems the rumors are true — Harry and William did, in fact, ask Charles not to marry Camilla, Queen Consort. Despite welcoming her into the royal family, the king's sons tried to tell their father he shouldn't remarry.

"That's why when the question came, Willy and I promised our father that we would welcome Camilla to the family. The only thing we asked for in return was that he didn't marry her. 'You don't need to get married again' we asked him," Harry wrote.

Harry Was Egged On By William And Kate To Wear The Infamous Nazi Uniform

Before Harry met Meghan and became a family man, he went through a bad-boy phase. During this time, he was photographed wearing a nazi uniform for a costume party in 2005.

But it seems his stunt was encouraged by the Prince and Princess of Wales. Before committing to the costume, Harry said he asked his brother and sister-in-law their opinion first:

“I phoned Willy and Kate, asked what they thought. Nazi uniform, they said. ... They both howled. Worse than Willy’s leotard outfit! Way more ridiculous! Which, again, was the point.”

Harry Experienced Panic Attacks Before Public Appearances

Harry has been incredibly open about his mental health in the last few years, and in his memoir, he revealed, "By the end of the summer of 2013, I was going through a bad moment, alternating between periods of debilitating lethargy and terrifying panic attacks." At the time, his royal duties included giving interviews and speeches, but he found he was "incapable of performing these basic functions." He soon realized putting on his suit became his trigger:

"By the time I put on my blazer and tied my shoes, sweat would be running on my cheeks and back."

Harry Had His Driver Speed Through The Tunnel Where Princess Diana's Car Crashed

In 2007, Harry asked his driver to speed through the same tunnel in Paris that killed his mother, at 65mph — the same speed that her car had been going. He wrote:

"Then we came to the mouth of the tunnel. We zipped ahead, went over the lip at the tunnel's entrance, the bump that supposedly sent Mummy's Mercedes veering off course. But the lip was nothing. We barely felt it."

He continued:

"Quietly I said: Is that all of it? It's…nothing. ... No reason anyone should ever die inside it."
