Ebony Johnson works as a cashier at a popular coffee chain in the state of Ohio. She is always happy and enthusiastic at work, providing a great service to loyal customers such as Suzanne Burke. Unbeknownst to the customers, Johnson had recently fallen on hard times, and was struggling a lot with her personal life.
The 33-year-old mother has been working at Dunkin’ for three years and typically handles operations at the drive-thru. However, there was a brief period of time in March 2020 when she wasn’t at her place of work at the Mount Healthy location, something that Burke had noticed. When Johnson finally returned to work, she confided in Burke, explaining that she and her children had been evicted from their home, leaving them homeless.
Johnson had been struggling with her finances for a while and was in the process of trying to find new housing for her and her three kids, but it felt like nothing was coming together. Wanting to help her favorite cashier, Burke offered to do whatever she could to fix the situation Johnson had found herself in.
Burke has done work with social services throughout the course of her career, so she had experience with reaching out to different businesses and organizations to see if anyone else could lend a helping hand. It took almost two years for everything to finally come together, but Burke managed to pull off the most amazing act of kindness for Johnson and her family in December 2021. A Place To Call Home
After struggling with her finances, getting evicted from her home and becoming homeless, Johnson was ready to give up. According to TODAY, she and her kids had been staying with family since March 2020, bouncing from place to place as they searched for a home they could finally call their own.
Speaking with TODAY, Johnson said, “I cried. I come to work every day and nobody knows what I’m going through because I always try to have a smile for our customers.” Thankfully, one of her customers wanted to do something to help Johnson in her time of need, to which Johnson graciously accepted.
Finally, on Dec. 3, 2021, Johnson and her kids walked into their new fully furnished apartment in Cincinnati, all thanks to kind people like Burke. “Oh my God, it was so amazing, I just busted out crying,” Johnson said. “...I’m just so thankful.” Burke added, “It was so exciting, we all cried.”
According to TODAY, Burke learned that Johnson would be getting the two-bedroom apartment, and a real estate staging company donated furniture to furnish the place. A Cincinnati-based organization called Strategies to End Homelessness also helped Johnson secure the apartment.
Now, Burke is working on securing a car for Johnson so she can drive to work, while Johnson and her family are enjoying their new home and all of the memories they’ll be able to make in it. “Last year we didn’t wake up to nothing,” Johnson said, speaking about how hard Christmas was in the past. “It was depress and stress. This year is going to be good because we’re in our home. I get to cook in my own kitchen for my kids.”
