Regis Philbin’s Spouse And Daughters Open Up Regarding Type Of Person He Was

Television host Regis Philbin died last week at the age of 88, leading to an outpouring of support from friends, family members, and longtime fans of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and Philbin’s syndicated morning show.

In an exclusive with People that came out this week, Philbin’s wife and daughters again took the opportunity to open up about their loss, speaking to Regis’ ability to “let everyone into his life.”

“He let everyone into his life,” Joy Philbin and their daughters Jennifer and Joanna told the magazine in their most recent statement. “He turned every little daily annoyance and happiness into a story, and he shared all those little stories with people in a joyful and conversational way. It made his audience feel like they were right alongside him — because they were.”

Following Regis’ death on July 24, the Philbin family first spoke out via a statement confirming his passing with more information. According to that statement, which the family also shared with People, Regis died of natural causes one month shy of his 89th birthday, which would have been on August 25.

"His family and friends are forever grateful for the time we got to spend with him – for his warmth, his legendary sense of humor, and his singular ability to make every day into something worth talking about,” the Philbin family added.

“We thank his fans and admirers for their incredible support over his 60-year career and ask for privacy as we mourn his loss.”

After a successful five-decade career, Regis Philbin became a fixture of American television, hosting Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee, Live! with Regis and Kelly, along with starring in sitcoms like How I Met Your Mother. Philbin even holds the Guinness World Record for the most hours on US television, appearing nearly 17,000 hours on screens across the country.

That outsize influence on the American media landscape was apparent last week as many of Philbin’s friends, coworkers, fans, and family members took to social media to remember the television star. In response, the Philbin family said that they were “overwhelmed” by the outpouring of “love.”

The family also asked fans to make a donation to New York City’s Food Bank in Regis’ memory, especially since he was a New Yorker himself. In fact, Regis, who was born in the Bronx in 1931, was named after Manhattan's Regis High School.

Philbin is survived by his wife, Joy, and their daughters Jennifer and Joanna, along with his daughter Amy Philbin from his first marriage with Catherine Faylen. Notre Dame University, Philbin’s alma mater, confirmed Sunday that they would host Regis’ memorial service at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, according to Deadline. Philbin will be buried at Cedar Grove Cemetary on campus.
