Rebel Wilson, renowned for her comedic prowess in films like “Pitch Perfect,” has opened up about how her significant weight loss has reshaped her career trajectory, steering her towards more serious and dramatic roles. The Australian actress, 45, made a name for herself in comedy with hit movies such as “Bridesmaids” and “The Hustle.” However, she has attributed her success in comedic roles to her weight at the time, saying she was eventually typecast in such roles automatically.

The actress shocked fans worldwide in 2020 when she debuted her weight loss transformation, revealing a dramatically slimmer figure. The actress dropped a stunning 80 pounds from walking and a high-protein diet. In a candid interview with SiriusXM radio host Ben Harlum, Wilson discussed the profound impact her 80-pound weight loss over five years has had on her professional life.

She acknowledged that shedding weight helped her break free from being typecast as the “bigger, funny girl,” a label she had embraced but was ready to move beyond. According to the actress, losing weight opened doors to many more diverse roles.

“From that point, I started getting offered more serious roles,” she said, referencing her role as Lady Capulet in 2025’s “Juliet & Romeo” and her role in the 2022 British indie, “The Almond and the Seahorse.”

Apart from her career, Wilson also lost weight as part of her dream to become a mother after consulting a fertility doctor.

Wilson elaborated on the changes losing weight has had on her career in Hollywood, as well as revealed the direction she wanted her career to take as an actress. She shared that her weight loss led to people seeing her differently, which impacted her career trajectory.

“So I think I kind of untypecast myself by losing weight,” she said. “I mean, I loved being the bigger, funny girl. Loved playing Fat Amy in the ‘Pitch Perfect’ movies. It was so cool, and that still is me in so many respects. I guess people... once I did lose weight, they started to see me a bit differently.”

Among her role models in the industry, Wilson has cited was Dame Judi Dench, whom she said she wanted to emulate, explaining that she did not want to star in comedy exclusively.

“I wanted to be like Dame Judi Dench and be really serious.”

However, her career took off in comedy, and she embraced that and the success that came with it.

“It’s just, I had something that people would like to laugh at, and then Nicole Kidman gave me this scholarship to come to America and specialize in comedy, and so that’s what I did,” she said. “Then when I came to Hollywood, I was just the full comedy girl.”

Now, the actress is welcoming the new roles she has taken on since her weight loss, saying she was excited about her career moving in a more serious direction.

“But now it’s kind of like almost going back to my roots as an actress and doing some serious stuff as well,” she said.

Comedy or not, we look forward to seeing Wilson in her upcoming roles!
