President George H.W. Bush will be remembered as many things throughout the ages. A heroic World War II fighter pilot. The victor of the Cold War. The liberator of Kuwait. A man who cared for his country and did everything he could to serve its people.

But by far, Bush’s lasting legacy will be the brightness of his character and the decency that shone through the mystique of the American presidency. Bush’s decency and general goodness were on full display in his funeral services.

His son, George W. Bush, a former president himself, choked up as he eulogized his deceased father, telling the world that no son or daughter could have ever asked for a more caring and attentive parent.

Even in death, Bush brought the nation together as former presidents of both Democratic and Republican affiliations sat together to honor the great man.

In the funeral service, country music icon Reba McEntire also showed the world how much the fallen president meant to her. McEntire and Bush had a long friendship throughout their lives. On news of the elder Bush’s death, McEntire joined the world in sending condolences to the president’s family. In an Instagram post, McEntire showed her sitting with the aging president, holding his hand and captioning the photo with the words “My favorite.”

When asked to sing “The Lord’s Prayer” at Bush’s funeral, McEntire was more than willing to accept to pay tribute to the president and her beloved friend. Entering St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in an elegant black dress, the country music superstar joined other mourners in celebrating the president’s life.

When it came time for her to sing “The Lord’s Prayer,” McEntire was visibly emotional.

The iconic singer had to pause for a moment after singing “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors,” dropping her gaze to the floor as tears stung her eyes. As cameras panned around the church, George W. Bush was seen wiping his eyes, overcome with emotion.

McEntire wasn’t the only country music star to perform at Bush’s funeral. The Oakridge Boys, one of the president’s favorite bands, sang “Amazing Grace.” The band had been friends with Bush since the 80s, first meeting when they performed at the White House when Bush was still vice president.

The Oakridge Boys had been approached by the Bush family several months ago about the possibility of performing at the president’s funeral. The band solemnly accepted the ailing president’s wishes. Other celebrities in attendance at the funeral include action stars Chuck Norris and Arnold Schwarzenegger and basketball player Yao Ming.

Bush’s funeral showed the former president’s human side, away from the grandeur of the White House and the halls of government. The tears shed by those who mourned him are a testament to President Bush’s kindness and loving relationships with family and friends.
