The contestants on "The Voice" know that it's the opportunity of a lifetime. So, they need to give it their all. In the blind audition process, they aren't able to hope to use a pretty face or charisma to curry favor with the judges. They need to rely on their God-given instrument to pull off a riveting rendition that captivates the judges and shows why they should be accepted on their team. One aspiring country singer proved how talented she is when she performed a Loretta Lynn classic.

Hannah Kay might be only 18 years old, but she's an old soul at heart. The Texan has a deep love for country music and reverence for legends of the genre. Loretta Lynn's classic "Coal Miner's Daughter" is one of the most esteemed country songs of all-time.

It's also deeply personal, as it deals with Lynn growing up in poverty as her father worked to keep her and his other seven children alive. It's been nearly 50 years since the song was first released, and it's one that artists have been understandably hesitant to cover. After all, wouldn't that be like an aspiring painter trying to recreate the Mona Lisa?

Kay knew what kind of expectations would be on her, especially with country singer Blake Shelton as one of the judges. As soon as the song begun, Shelton knew exactly what was being performed and he was almost immediately won over, bringing himself face-to-face with Kay well before the song was over. Fellow judge Kelly Clarkson followed suit. It was clear that Kay had something special.

Shelton and Clarkson showered Kay with effusive praise, not only for her performance but also for her devotion to old-school country. Kay decided she would be a part of Shelton's team. If this performance was any indication, she could be the one to beat on this season of "The Voice."

The power of a performance like Kay's doesn't come along often. Even though she didn't write the song, she respects it and Lynn more than enough. She's able to make the song her own while honoring its origins. That's not something that can be done easily, no matter how great of a singer someone is. Time and time again, versatility is an asset.
