We had seen the most stunning portraits of Queen Elizabeth II for most of her reign as monarch, especially during her older years when people started to have more access to her life through television and social media. But have you always wondered what Her Majesty looked like during her younger years?

Queen Elizabeth II was the reigning monarch of England for an incredible 70 years, but sadly her time came to an end when she passed away in September 2022.

She passed away while at her home in Balmoral after Buckingham Palace had earlier announced that she was under medical attention. It was a devastating day for the royal family as many members gathered to be by her side in her final moments.

Despite making it to an incredible 96 years of age, the queen proved there was no slowing her down. 2022 was a big year for her after she celebrated 70 years as Queen of the United Kingdom and 15 Commonwealth realms in February.

This was not only a milestone for her but for the entire world, as she was the first British ruling monarch to reach the seven-decade mark. In fact, she made further history when she became the second longest-serving monarch ever. She's only bested by one other ruler, Louis XIV of France

Her funeral had drawn millions of mourners across different parts of the globe, with thousands lining up at Westminster Hall to catch a final glimpse of her and pay their respects one last time.

The public was used to seeing Queen Elizabeth II at her very best all the time, so there was some concern for her health when she was recovering from a back injury in November 2021.

Elizabeth always made sure to attend important events in any way that she could, and while she couldn't be present for her five-yearly visit to General Synod, which is the national assembly of the Church of England, she made sure to include a meaningful message for all attendees.

It was the first time that the queen had not attended the event since it first began in 1970. Naturally, she was deeply missed, but she did not leave attendees without someone there representing the crown.

ELLE reported that Prince Edward went to the event in place of his mother and read her message, which stated: "It is hard to believe that it is over 50 years since Prince Philip and I attended the very first meeting of the General Synod."

It continued:

"None of us can slow the passage of time, and while we often focus on all that has changed in the intervening years, much remains unchanged, including the Gospel of Christ and his teachings."

In May 2022, a BBC documentary called 'Elizabeth II: The Unseen Queen' featured never-before-seen photos and clips of the late queen. While she became a queen at an early age, that doesn't mean she didn't get to experience the joys of growing up as a kid. But the documentary proved that she, too, was once a happy kid who had fun like regular kids before she took on the role of becoming a queen. The queen even called it "the fun behind the formality."

The reels, which were taken by members of the royal family themselves, have never been seen by the public. They have been kept in a vault at the British Film Institute for so long.

In the documentary, the queen explained why she approved the release of the home movies and decided to give the world a glimpse into the lives of the members of the royal family.

"Cameras have always been a part of our lives. I think there's a difference to watching a home movie when you know who it is on the other side of the lens filming the camera," the queen said

As it turns out, Queen Elizabeth II had a more meaningful reason for the release of the reels than meets than eye.

"I always enjoyed capturing family moments. You always hoped the future generations will find them interesting and be surprised that you, too, were young once," she remarked.

Around 400 reels from Her Majesty's royal collection were viewed by the producers of the film to come up with the masterpiece.

Ahead of the release of the documentary, the BBC and The Royal Family shared photos of the queen on Instagram. These photos included ones taken during her days as a toddler, others while she was a kid, and some during her teenage days.

In one of the photos, she can be seen playing with her dad, King George VI. There was also a photo of her posing with a dog and another with her sister, Princess Margaret

These photos and videos gave a rare glimpse of her personal life as an ordinary woman outside her role as monarch, far from her image of donning an elegant dress. But more than anything else, it's a reminder to everyone that we should enjoy life. Because, as Her Royal Majesty puts it, we, too, were young once. But life is short, so we might as well live it to the fullest!
