This year is by far one of the coldest in the history of the midwestern states. The icy and cold weather is a climate phenomenon. With the dreadful cold, nature has yet a trick up her sleeve to reveal the beauty of each season. The unusual phenomena that occurred in the Fruit Ridge of Michigan were given the name 'ghost apples', and you will soon find out why.

It was Andrew Sietsema who first came to TV journalists to show the unusual ice formations that were hanging from his pruning trees. The rare pictures that he took are something almost unbelievable and took the world by storm once they went viral.

The cold weather created ice apple shapes that took the place of rotten apples from the previous year. The solid shell that formed around the fruit is a perfect ice copy of the apple that was in the same place.

This phenomenon was caused by the extremely low temperatures combined with freezing rains. The rotten apple stayed just long enough for the ice to cast itself over it. After that, the rotten apple slipped from the ice formation on the softer bottom that could no longer hold the weight of the original fruit. Apples freeze at lower temperatures than water, so it is no wonder that apples were the most likely fruit to produce this result.

Unfortunately, Sietsema had to trim his trees for the following year losing the beautiful 'ghost apples' in the process. His favorite ghost apples are those of his Jonagold trees. He jokingly calls their apple ghosts "Jonaghosts".
