Rachel Ward, 68, Responds to Critics of Her Natural Aging With a Bold & Unexpected Message
Feb 09, 2026 by apost team
Rachel Ward is making it clear that she has no intention of apologizing for aging—or for choosing to live on her own terms. The actress, 68, addressed criticism about her appearance after a video she shared while promoting her work as a cattle farmer drew online commentary.
Ward runs a beef cattle farm in Australia with her husband, actor Bryan Brown, 78, whom she met while starring alongside him in the landmark 1983 television miniseries "The Thorn Birds." The couple married in 1983 and has largely lived outside the Hollywood spotlight for decades.
While promoting her farming life, Ward received comments on social media questioning why she looked older than expected and why she had not taken steps to appear more youthful. The remarks sparked strong reactions from fans, many of whom defended Ward and praised her for embracing a natural approach to aging.
Ward’s comments arrive amid a broader cultural conversation about aging, particularly for women who rose to prominence in earlier decades and now face renewed scrutiny in the age of social media. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Ward has largely stepped away from acting, focusing instead on farming, family life, and creative work behind the camera, including directing.
Her refusal to undergo cosmetic intervention or to be publicly defensive stands out in an industry that often equates relevance with youth. By addressing criticism calmly and with gratitude rather than anger, Ward shifted the focus from appearance to fulfillment. The message she offered was not just personal but communal—an invitation to rethink how aging is viewed and valued.

In response, Ward shared a thoughtful message on Instagram on January 15, thanking those who supported her and offering a broader reflection on aging, fulfillment, and perspective. She wrote:
“Dear those of you who responded to the brouhaha over the trolls criticizing my appearance, I have tried to do a little better today. I ran my hands through my hair, etc. but anyways, just to say, do not fear aging. It’s a wonderful period of life, in your 60s. I am more fulfilled than ever and I have no regrets, leaving my youth and beauty behind.”
Ward went on to describe how her relationship with aging has evolved into one rooted in contentment rather than comparison: “I’m not youthful, but I am a very happy camper.” She wrote.
“Later years are to be exalted and welcomed. You wait until you get there. They have so many other gifts to bestow that you have no idea what they are until you get there.”
The actress acknowledged that concerns about aging are common, even universal, but cautioned against clinging to youth at all costs. She said she was “overwhelmed” by the number of people who came to her defense and reassured supporters that she was not affected by the criticism. Ward said, “Don’t worry about me,” then added:
“I do recognize that we’re all a little bit worried about losing our youth and resorting to rather drastic ways of holding on to it, but let it go.”
She ended by saying:
“Let it go, and much bounty will come. Anyway, I just thank you from [my heart]. It was amazing to receive that response from you all.”
