Raccoon Caught Red-Handed After Vending Machine Robbery Goes Wrong

A fearless raccoon got caught trying to commit a heist at a high school in Florida. The feisty little fellow got stuck in an outdoor vending machine at Pine Ridge High School in Deltona.

Living up to its reputation as a bandit, the raccoon entered the vending machine through the swinging flap at the bottom of the machine. However, the raccoon found that while the bottom flap allowed him easy entry to the machine, it didn’t make for a very good exit.

Upon noticing the raccoon trapped in the machine, school officials contacted the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Danny Clifton responded to the school’s call, later joking that he had caught the little bandit red-handed. With the help of Deltona Animal Control Officer Marion Quinones, Deputy Clifton loaded the vending machine onto a dolly and brought it into a more wooded area where the raccoon would feel safe.

Andrew Gant, a police spokesperson, told The Dodo that after a little encouragement, the raccoon left the machine. Despite the seriousness of the offense, Deputy Clifton decided not to charge the raccoon with theft, instead, he let him go on his way with a warning.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Department posted a video of Deputy Clifton rescuing the animal from the machine to facebook. The video has thus far been watched over 40,000 times on the platform and generated hundreds of likes from raccoon lovers and people who enjoy seeing cute animals in funny situations. Spokesperson Gant himself later told The Dodo how much he loves raccoons.
