It’s the diagnosis that each and every single parent is afraid of. “Your child has lice.” Thousands of children come home from school with this diagnosis each school year.

The tiny lice make their way through classrooms all over the world! Contraction of lice can especially occur in the colder months when children share hats and other belongings on the playground during recess, which helps spread the little bugs. Although this dreaded diagnosis isn’t the worst thing that could happen and is curable, it still can be frustrating to deal with when your child is fussy.

Not only are they incredibly itchy on the scalp, but they are also immensely hard to remove in their entirety and often come back just when you think you've removed them all.

Depending on how relaxed and patient your child is, removing lice can be anywhere from a simple one-day challenge to a long dreaded nightmare that persists for weeks.

Although lice are nowhere near fatal and aren’t especially dangerous to contract, they are still extremely unpleasant to be diagnosed with.

Lice multiply at an alarming rate, so dealing with them instantly upon diagnosis is important and crucial to getting rid of the pests for good.

You’ve probably heard of numerous commercial products and different types of shampoo that claim to remove lice completely, but their effectiveness isn’t always guaranteed and often they just don't work.

For the treatment of a large family of lice, you will need more than one bottle of these products, which can add up in price and is also a hassle. It also will take you spending hours to remove the eggs one by one, and children often don’t have the patience to sit there while you remove them over a long period of time. Thankfully, there are other methods you can try to remove the lice from your child’s head.

This method is cost-effective and doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals. It also allows you to avoid the excruciating removal process. Another plus is that you probably already have these ingredients in your home!

What You’ll Need For This Process

  • Mouthwash
  • White wine vinegar
  • A shower cap, or a plastic bag
  • Shampoo
  • A towel
  •  A lice comb

How To Use This Method

  1. Saturate your hair in the mouthwash until it is completely wet. Cover it with your shower cap, or use a plastic bag if you don’t have one. Let this substance sit in your hair for one hour. The fragrance from the mouthwash will drive the bugs away.
  2. Rinse the mouthwash from your hair. Now, apply the white wine vinegar all over. Cover your hair with the shower cap or plastic bag again, and allow to sit for one additional hour. Vinegar helps with removing all of the eggs that remain.
  3. Rinse, and wash your hair with your normal shampoo. Begin combing the area with the lice comb.

If you hear rumors about lice being spread at school, an additional tip that can help prevent them from infecting your child’s scalp is to spray your child’s hair with a small amount of mouthwash. Doing this before they leave for school can help prevent lice from ever touching your child’s hair while leaving it with a minty fresh scent!
