Ian Ball was arrested after the incident in central London where he attempted to kidnap the Princess as she drove home to Buckingham Palace with her husband and entourage. Ball blocked her car with his own and began shooting with two revolvers that struck a policeman, a journalist, the royal chauffeur, and her bodyguard Inspector James Beaton whom she visited in the hospital later on.

Ronnie describes that he was coming home as well when he saw the event unfold thinking it was a road rage incident. The brave boxer immediately came to the couples' aid and courageously punched the attacker twice in the chin, but not before being shot as well.

As he stood to gain the George medal for his bravery, he had to be visited by policemen at his home. They looked around and asked if he had a mortgage to which he replied yes. They gave him the happy news that the Queen would be paying it off for him, which he was very grateful for as he was close to repossession at the time.
