Queen Elizabeth has released a statement following Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's announcement of their stepping down from royal duties. Sources report that the couple did not tell Buckingham Palace before making the announcement leaving royal members "hurt" and "disappointed" by Harry and Meghan's decision.

Royal correspondent Jonny Dymond for BBC News wrote on social media that Buckingham Palace felt 'blindsided' and "disappointed" by the news. A palace source told Dymond, "senior members of the Royal family feel “hurt” by the announcement that Harry and Meghan are to withdraw from their current Royal roles. The source confirmed that no members of the royal family were consulted."

The Queen released a statement understanding Meghan and Harry's "desire to take a different approach." However, they have said the details have yet to be sorted.

The statement reads as per the Mirror: "Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

Taking to their official Instagram account last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had posted a statement announcing they “intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and “work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”

The couple added that they will be splitting their time between the Prince’s native United Kingdom and North America and will be announcing the launch of their new charitable entity in the near future. The move comes just days after the couple’s return from a six-week-long hiatus in Canada with their 8-month son Archie, where they spent Christmas with Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland

Many commentators supported Meghan and Harry's decision to carve out their own life as a couple. One wrote, "Good for you both! It’s so important to carve out your own path as a couple and honor the passions inherent in both of your heritages. Be at peace with your decision. The heart knows best!" While another user said, "I'm so happy for y'all. You're doing what's best for your family."

Political head for Republic, Graham Smith, however, did not hold back when criticizing the Duke and Duchess' decision to step back without consulting anybody. He told BBC it "raises questions about the monarchy's future." He also believes that the couple mentioning that they will work towards becoming financially independent is "incredibly crass and belies a sense of self-entitlement and a lack of self-awareness that is common among royals."

"This really is wanting to have your cake and eat it. They have said they will dip in and out of royal duties as it suits them but won't stop taking public money until they find other sources of income."
