Queen Elizabeth’s Handwritten Letter To Young Prince William Is A Testament To Their Close Relationship

On June 21, 1982, Prince William was born to King Charles III (then Prince Charles) and his then-wife, Diana, Princess of Wales, at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital, London. As a member of the royal family and the heir apparent to the throne, the young man has been prepared from childhood to assume the royal of sovereign after his grandmother's and father's reigns.

Queen Elizabeth, who sat on the throne for the majority of her life, was a great sense of direction and strength for William. Both as a royal as well as a grandmother. Namely, after the untimely passing of his mother, Princess Diana, in Paris, France, in 1997, Prince William became increasingly close with his grandmother, the queen.

Partially due to the death of his mother and also his place in the line of succession, Queen Elizabeth and William became very close through the years. It is no surprise that the now-grown William was especially crushed when she passed in September 2022.

Since Queen Elizabeth’s death, tributes from her family members captured the hearts of many online. These included tributes from her own son, King Charles, her granddaughter Lady Louise Windsor and Kate Middleton among many others. One letter, in particular, has emerged and gone viral, as it shows the relationship between the late royal and her grandson, Prince William.

The letter may have been short but it certainly was sweet and showed off the late queen’s loving personality toward her grandchildren. Read on to learn more about Queen Elizabeth and Prince William’s relationship.

Queen Elizabeth and her grandson Prince William became very close through the years, and it is no surprise that a young William received letters from his dear grandmother.

“The queen plays a very special dual role in William’s life,” said Katie Nicholl, the author of books such as "The Making of a Royal Romance,” in an April 2021 interview with OK! Magazine. “She is his sovereign, but also a very loving grandmother who wants to prepare him for the future.”

Reportedly, the queen began to prepare William for the role of king from a young age, pulling him out of Eton College, his boarding school, every Sunday. At the time, the 13-year-old student would reportedly tell a white lie and say that he was going to the bathroom when, in fact, he would visit Elizabeth at Windsor Castle. The publication further explained that William hid his weekly sessions from his friends because of his modesty. He was preparing to become a king, after all!

"Afterwards, he would have one-on-one time with his grandmother to talk about whatever was on his mind," Nicholl explained. "She was there for him to unload on — but those sessions were also an opportunity for her to mentor and teach him, as her grandfather, George V, did with her."

Based on the royal line of succession, William is the current heir apparent to King Charles III, who acceded to the throne in September 2022. William is followed in the order of succession by his three children — George, Charlotte and Louis.

Nicholl spoke further about William and Elizabeth's close relationship: "They became incredibly close and as his respect for her grew he began to embrace his destiny." In a recently unraveled letter, Prince William’s closeness with his grandmother was once again on display after the letter he received from his grannie was auctioned off in 2016.

Shortly after Queen Elizabeth passed away in Balmoral Castle on Sept. 8, 2022, Prince William issued a statement, mourning a precious life loss.

"She was by my side at my happiest moments. And she was by my side during the saddest days of my life,” the current Prince of Wales said in a statement. “I knew this day would come, but it will be some time before the reality of life without Grannie will truly feel real.”

William clearly never forgot his grandmother's presence throughout his life, especially during those dark days. While they may no longer share afternoons together at Windsor, the two royals were close, even as William began a family of his own.

Prince William, along with his wife, Kate, and their children George, Charlotte and Louis were all present at the queen’s funeral.

Elizabeth’s relationship with her grandson, William, was revisited online after the Twitter account, Royal Household Mail posted a photo of a letter that the late queen sent her dear grandson.

“A card written in the hand of #QueenElizabethII and sent to the young #PrinceWilliam obviously along with an advent calendar,” the tweet said.

The handwritten letter by the late queen was auctioned off by RR Auction in Boston in 2016 after it was purchased by one of Princess Diana’s former staffers.

"William, I hope you enjoy opening this each day, Granny," the note read.

According to the Daily Mail, Robert Livingston, the Vice President of RR Auction described the note to be “a seldom-encountered piece of correspondence from within the royal family, enhanced by its fitting Christmastime association.” The outlet estimated that the note was sold for around £1,270 or $1,500.
