Queen Elizabeth Loved A Famous British Sandwich So Much She Ate It For 9 Decades

Everyone has that distinct food where, no matter how old you get, you will always crave and eat it no matter what the occasion may be. Royals are not exempted from that. In this case, the late Queen Elizabeth II set her eyes on a familiar British snack that she grew to love ever since she was a young girl living at Buckingham Palace.

It's no secret that Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, lived a healthy lifestyle over the course of her more than seven-decade reign as monarch. From breakfast and lunch to snacks and all the way to dinner, Her Majesty followed a balanced diet throughout her life. After all, she wouldn't have lived until the age of 96 if she had eaten everything she wanted.

Major royal events, dinners and other important occasions need a lot of planning and execution — everything from the guest list down to the food needs to be organized meticulously. Furthermore, it is imperative that safety is on top of the list to ensure that important attendees are guarded well.

In 2019, the New York Post reported on a documentary that aired on Britain's Channel 5 which explained that after all the food was cooked, one plate was chosen at random for the queen to eat. She never had an assigned plate, so it could never be tampered with.

To ensure that all food that came up to the queen was of the highest quality, the British Royal Family enlisted personal chefs to cook for them, at any time of the day and any food they wanted.

Queen Elizabeth II's former chef, Darren McGrady, worked for the royal household for 15 years. He told the New York Post: "The Queen has a royal menu book that is completed by the chef. The chef does three days' menus and that gives us enough time to get all the produce in and prepare it."

McGrady also said that Queen Elizabeth banned certain items from the Buckingham Palace kitchen, as he revealed: "We can never serve anything with garlic or too much onions."

The royal chef added that the queen preferred to stick to traditional "British and French" dishes and wasn't adventurous when trying new foods. She would instead eat the "same dishes week in and week out." Her taste was starkly different from her husband, Prince Philip, who would "get excited about new ingredients."

While it seems like the queen's techniques to keep her safe from being poisoned and her choices for the royal menu set her apart from the common man, she was more like a normal person than one imagines.

And just like any other person, Queen Elizabeth enjoyed eating in between meals to stuff herself on busy days. The queen considered having tea a necessity in the afternoon. Royal biographer Katie Nicholl said cucumber sandwiches, fruit cake and more earl grey tea were part of the menu.

However, it seemed that Nicholl missed one integral part of the queen’s favorite foods. In a video posted by McGrady in 2021, the royal chef noted a particular fruity British dish that Queen Elizabeth enjoyed eating every day for a long time, from when she was just as young as Princess Charlotte.

In the video that Chef McGrady posted on his official YouTube channel, he revealed that Queen Elizabeth had been served a British delicacy that is very familiar to every household in the country. The sandwich he referred to is called British Pennies.

McGrady conducted a step-by-step tutorial on his YouTube channel so that his followers could make the sandwich for themselves. He started by spreading a generous amount of butter on two slices of white bread. Afterward, a spoonful of jam — however, the queen preferred Scottish strawberries — was lathered on one slice. Afterward, they were “sandwiched” together, and he used a cookie cutter to make two small circles that resembled pennies.

And just like that, one of Queen Elizabeth’s favorite afternoon snacks was made. Usually, the sandwich was served alongside a cup of Earl Grey tea.

Meanwhile, users showered their thoughts on Chef McGrady’s YouTube video and reminisced on how relatable Queen Elizabeth II was with her humble favorite sandwich.

“The weird thing is, going school in England anyone who had jam sandwiches was called poor! And here I am finding out the Queen eats them, wish I could show the bullies this haha! A lot of that food seems so simple but just is reminder there’s so much naturally nice things no need for all this Just Eat and Deliveroo!,” a user stated.

“My condolences for her Majesty's passing. I hope your channel has much success. Many people are more interested now than an ever in learning about the Queen! My students wanted to know all about afternoon tea since I told them the queen ate it every day, so your videos will be very handy,” another person said.
