Born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on April 21, 1926, in London, the future Queen was the eldest daughter of King George VI and Elizabeth, Duchess of York. At birth, she was not first in the line of succession, but after her uncle abdicated the throne and her father became King, she became next in line.

During the 1980s and '90s, the British monarchy moved more prominently into the media's focus and was even under great criticism after being involved in a number of scandals. In 1992 Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson announced their separation, as did Prince Charles and Princess Diana in the same year. Princess Anne's marriage also broke up. However, the Queen kept up a strong face in these difficult times.
