Queen Elizabeth Becomes World's Fourth Longest Reigning Monarch

Queen Elizabeth is now officially the world’s fourth longest-reigning monarch, after surpassing Pakal the Great, a Mayan ruler. 

As of today, the Queen has held the throne for 68 years and 34 days, one day longer than her predecessor.

According to the Daily Mail, the title is just one of many impressive accolades Queen Elizabeth has under her belt. At 93 years of age, she is currently the longest-living reigning monarch and the longest-reigning monarch of the UK. 

The British monarch has now earned the title of the fourth longest-reigning monarch in the world, after surpassing Mayan ruler Paka the Great’s reign by one day.

Just ahead of the Queen is Johann II of Liechtenstein, who served as the Prince of Liechtenstein for 70 years and 91 days from 1858 and 1929. 

Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand bares second place in the title, having ruled from 1946 until his death in 2016. Queen Elizabeth became the longest-living reigning monarch following his death. The longest-reigning monarch of all time is at this time Louis XIV of France, who held the French throne for over 72 years.

Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1952 following the death of her father George VI. Her coronation took place the following year, as is customary following the death of a reigning monarch.

Her coronation marked the first to have ever been televised, a move that was seen by some as controversial at the time.
