Queen 'Deeply Upset,' Expected To Attend Funeral After Faithful Housekeeper Of 40 Years Passes Away

Annette Wilkins began working for the royal family in 1974 as a teenage maid and worked her way up to head housekeeper. She recently passed away at the age of 72 after a short illness, and the Queen will reportedly break tradition and attend her funeral because she is “deeply upset”, reports the Daily Mail.

Miss Wilkins was responsible for making sure everything in the household ran smoothly at the Queen’s residence of Windsor Castle, as well as Frogmore House where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stay. A royal insider told the Daily Mail about her duties:

"Annette would be in charge of getting rooms ready for visiting heads of state staying at the castle, unpacking their cases and carefully putting personal items like teddy bears in their place on the bed," the source said. "No detail was too much trouble for her, she was a perfectionist."

Her talents came in handy when a 1992 fire devastated the castle and she needed to have everything up and running again.

After 40 loyal years by the Queen’s side, she retired in 2014. But the Queen wanted to be close to her and so employed her again as a personal dresser assistant.

That was not the only honor bestowed upon her.

She also received a gift that would be very dear to the Queen’s heart, a royal corgi named Larch who sat by Miss Wilkins’ feet as she planned the day. She also received a cottage on the grounds of Windsor to live in and was made “a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order for her dedicated work,” according to a royal aide.

A source also told the Daily Mail.:

“The Queen and all the royals absolutely adored her and she was almost part of the family. She never married but was devoted to her job and gave her life to the royal family.”

There was no official statement from Buckingham Palace but a royal aide told reporters that,

“Annette gave more than 45 years service to the Royal Household...She will be greatly missed.”
