Queen Camilla Marked 79th Birthday With Royal Tribute & Magical Gift For Children
Jul 20, 2026 by apost team
Queen Camilla marked her 79th birthday with official portraits that combined royal elegance with a touching tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. Photographer Chris Jackson captured the images at Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland on May 20, 2026, before they were released on July 17, 2026.
In the portraits, Camilla smiles warmly in a blue dress by British designer Fiona Clare. She completed her look with a diamond-and-sapphire butterfly brooch associated with the late Queen. The Buckingham Palace handouts accompanied the announcement of Camilla’s nationwide children’s reading initiative.
The brooch gave the polished images a personal dimension. The jewel was presented to Queen Elizabeth II during a visit to the Birmingham Spring Fair in February 1977. By wearing it for her birthday portraits, Camilla appeared to acknowledge her late mother-in-law’s enduring royal legacy.
Born Camilla Rosemary Shand on July 17, 1947, the Queen married King Charles III at Windsor Guildhall on April 9, 2005. A service of prayer and dedication followed at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Camilla was crowned alongside King Charles III at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023.
According to the Royal Family’s official website, Camilla supports more than 100 charities as patron or president. Her principal causes include literacy, health and wellbeing, animal welfare, the arts, and assistance for survivors of sexual and domestic violence. Her birthday portraits therefore represented more than a personal milestone: they also introduced a project connected to one of the defining themes of her public work.

To accompany the portraits, Queen Camilla announced “The Queen’s Christmas Present,” a partnership with the National Literacy Trust created for the National Year of Reading 2026.
Every Year 6 child in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, together with every Primary 6 child in Scotland, is set to receive a special edition of Katherine Rundell’s bestselling fantasy novel “Impossible Creatures.”
Children of the equivalent age who are not enrolled in school will also be included. The National Literacy Trust stated that books and educational resources will be distributed through libraries and community outreach programs serving hospitals, care settings, refuges and food banks.
Each special edition will carry a unique royal stamp on its cover and a personal message from Camilla:
“’Impossible Creatures,’ by one of my favourite writers, is a brilliant fantasy that will introduce you to a host of mythical friends and terrifying enemies… and I hope that you will love it as much as I do.”
The initiative extends beyond the distribution of books. During the 2026–2027 autumn term, schools will have access to free classroom materials, teacher webinars and an online assembly led by Rundell. Libraries and community organizations will also receive resources intended to help children and their families explore the story.
Camilla became patron of the National Literacy Trust in November 2010, while she was Duchess of Cornwall. She launched her Reading Room as an online book club in January 2021. It developed into the registered charity The Queen’s Reading Room in 2023, promoting literature through educational projects, author discussions and public events.
The portrait’s royal sparkle may attract attention, but the accompanying project conveys a deeper message: books can offer children confidence, enjoyment and a doorway into unfamiliar worlds.
