Pub Landlady Bans Children Permanently Because They Made "A Lot Of Noise" On Father's Day

Today, more and more people are choosing to have a wedding without any children present. This was not a norm in the past, but it is quickly catching on today because it means a ceremony with less chaos and worries without kids there. Now, some restaurants and pubs are following suit and limiting when children can enter their premises with their parents. Some locations, for example, like bars, are not appropriate for children under a certain age. Other places, like high-class restaurants, tend to limit children to maintain the atmosphere of the place.

Recently, one pub in Hampshire, England permanently banned children from entering the pub with their parents after a "ghastly" experience with unruly children on Father's Day 2021. The pub, called The Compass Inn, had previously severely limited when families with children could dine there. However, the most recent episode on Sunday, June 20, 2021, led the landlady of the pub, Mop Draper, to say that the ban was needed to save her adult customers that visit the pub for "peace and quiet". She described what happened that led her to this decision on Father's Day to BBC News.

Her decision has led to different reactions from people; some supported Draper fully while others criticized her for punishing people with well-behaved children. However, Draper stood by her decision and refused to enter children who were under 12 years old into the pub from this week onwards. Read on to know more about why this pub decided to completely ban children and how some people reacted.

Draper told BBC News that some children were making "a lot of noise... it was just bad for all the rest of the people eating" on Father's Day, and this was the last straw.  "Other tables were complaining because they were shouting and screaming - it was just ghastly," she added. Draper did recognize that her decision to ban children completely was certainly "pretty sad for the children that do behave themselves."

In fact, Draper had banned children under 12 from entering the pub on six days out of seven in the week, leaving only Sunday open for families with young children. The pub would continue to honor the already-existing bookings with children but would no longer take any fresh bookings in the future. Cheshire Live reported that she explained, "It’s a shame that I have had to make this decision but we are ultimately an adult-only pub but some families disregard this fact that we expect their children to behave which unfortunately is not always the case."

This announcement had mixed reactions on social media. One user, Wendy Bruder said, "Good for you. Poorly behaved kids are the worst. Shame on their parents." However, others criticized her for making things difficult for people with children who cause no problems. Another user Debbie Drury posted, "Wouldn't it be better, rather than tar every family with the same brush, [to] offer an adult-only area for adults who clearly don't like kids." Naturally, not everyone would agree with Draper for her decision, but she has stood by it even with the criticism.
