Proud 26-Year-Old Mom Justifies Posting Videos With Teenage 'Bonus Son'

There are many ways to call our moms: mama, mommy, mum, or even as simple as the word mother. You can choose however you want to call your mom. Whatever your term of endearment is, if you are comfortable with it, then there’s nothing wrong with it. But of course, it goes the same for moms who also have the right to call themselves however they see fit – as long as they are being true to the titles they have bestowed upon themselves. But the reality is the internet might not agree with you all the time.
A then-25-year-old mom Courtney Lee Hewitt posted a video of her singing and dancing with her 14-year-old son on TikTok. But if you took a closer look at her post – specifically her caption – it said there that she referred to him as a “bonus son.” This left many people with a lot of questions inside their heads: “Did she give birth to him at age 11? What does a bonus son even mean?”
As it turns out, “bonus son” meant a stepson to Hewitt, now 26.
Without surprise, the video received mixed reactions from moms who watched her video, which has since received millions of views since it was posted in 2021.
“For a second I thought she had a child at 11 but then I realized (she didn’t),” one user commented. “How old were u when u gave birth to the 14-year-old,” another user wrote.
But when some of them finally realized what the video was all about, they said they had hoped she made it clear from the very start.

“For Christ's sake at least include "step" in between bonus and son,” another user wrote.
Of course, the video brought smiles to the faces of everyone who have seen it – especially since it shows a mom enjoying her time with her kid and simply having fun. “She gives off cool mom vibes and I'm here for it,” one user said.
But what’s more commendable is that she still made him feel like her own, even if he is not her biological son. “When you just turned 25 and you have a 14-year-old bonus son,” Hewitt wrote.
In her TikTok video, she explained the difference between being a stepmom and being a bonus mom. “Being a bonus mother is earned, the stepmother is just someone who marries the dad.”
But her explanation further divided the internet, with some saying the term she used could be offensive to some moms.
“This 'explanation' can be hurtful to other wonderful stepmothers in toxic situations. No hate, just making people aware,” a user said.
But not everyone viewed Hewitt’s TikTok video in a negative way. In fact, some of them praised her for doing her part in debunking the idea that stepmoms are always cruel toward their stepchildren. “I see it as every Disney movie, the stepmothers are pure evil. I refuse to be that. I say, bonus mom,” one user said.
Not only did Hewitt show that stepmoms and their children can live in harmony, but she also helped her bonus son Ayden Keith Jacobs find newfound fame. He now has more than 50,000 followers as of this writing.
If there’s one lesson from Hewitt’s post, it’s that they can call each other whatever they want for as long as they love each other.
