Nearly five decades after his death, Elvis Presley’s influence continues to resonate across music and culture. His voice, style, and charisma helped define an era, but mystery continues to shadow his story. Since his passing in 1977 at just 42, rumors have persisted that the “King of Rock ’n’ Roll” faked his death to escape fame. These conspiracy theories remain a curious part of his legacy.
Among the few who can speak with absolute authority about Elvis is Priscilla Presley. She lived beside him during both intimate and iconic chapters of his life and has carried the dual role of preserving his memory and shaping his public legacy. Their connection began in 1959, when Priscilla was living in Germany, where her stepfather served with the U.S. Air Force. Elvis, stationed there for his military service, was already becoming a household name. Their chance meeting blossomed into a relationship that would change both of their lives.
By 1963, Priscilla’s parents agreed to let her move to Memphis, Tennessee, where she joined Elvis in his world of music, fame, and unrelenting attention. Just a few years later, in 1967, the couple married in a ceremony that captured global headlines. She was 21, he was 32, and their union soon welcomed a daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, in 1968.
Though their marriage ended in divorce in the early 1970s, Priscilla remained steadfast in supporting Lisa Marie’s relationship with her father. That devotion, along with her own resilience, shaped the years that followed.
Their story continues to inspire fascination, as seen in Sofia Coppola’s 2023 film “Priscilla,” adapted from Priscilla’s memoir “Elvis and Me.” Yet, Priscilla has emphasized that the real story was often gentler than the dramatized version on screen.

In fall 2025, Priscilla expanded on her experiences in a new memoir, “Softly, as I Leave You: Life After Elvis.” In it, she not only reflected on her life with the music legend but also addressed the myths that have persisted since his death. Priscilla, 80, continues to balance honoring Elvis’s truth with protecting the man behind the icon.
In a conversation with PEOPLE, she directly confronted one of the most popular and enduring conspiracies: the claim that Elvis never died.
“There’s been so much that’s untruthful out there – things like Elvis is still alive and hidden somewhere,” she explained, making clear that she does not believe such stories.
Her words carried both clarity and tenderness when she added: “I wish he was still alive.”
Priscilla also recalled her youthful uncertainties during those early years, describing how meeting Elvis shaped her path.
“I met him at such a young age I didn’t have time to think about life yet,” she recounted.
While she hadn’t envisioned careers in teaching, nursing, or secretarial work, her life with Elvis led her toward a different trajectory, one she said she cherished. As for depictions of Elvis’s temper in Coppola’s film, Priscilla clarified that while he could lose patience, he was never violent toward her. One memory she recounted involved him tossing a chair during a heated phone call with Colonel Parker, only to regret it and rush to reassure her immediately.
For Priscilla, truth matters. In separating the man she loved from the myths that surround him, she provides a more human portrait, one of a devoted father, a flawed but caring partner, and a figure whose absence is still deeply felt.
