Princess Lilibet of Sussex celebrated her fifth birthday on June 4, 2026, marking another milestone for one of the youngest members of the British royal family. As the daughter of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Lilibet has attracted global interest since her birth, despite her parents’ efforts to maintain a relatively private family life.
Born as Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor on June 4, 2021, at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, she is the second child of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the younger sister of Prince Archie of Sussex. Her birth was announced two days later, introducing the world to a child whose name carries deep royal significance.
The name “Lilibet” honors her paternal great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who was affectionately known by that nickname among close family members. Her middle name, “Diana,” pays tribute to her late grandmother, Diana, Princess of Wales. Family members often refer to her by the nickname “Lili.”
As a granddaughter of King Charles III, Princess Lilibet occupies seventh place in the line of succession to the British throne. Although she was born in the United States, she remains a member of the House of Windsor and holds both American and British citizenship. Her birth was historically significant, as she became one of the few senior descendants of the British monarch to be born outside the United Kingdom.
Lilibet’s early years have largely been spent in Montecito, California, where she lives with her parents and older brother. The Sussex family relocated to the United States after Prince Harry and Meghan stepped back as working members of the Royal Family in 2020. According to the official Royal Family website, the couple continue to be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and are parents to both Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

One of the most notable moments in Lilibet’s young life came in June 2022, when she met her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II during celebrations for the monarch’s Platinum Jubilee. The occasion marked an important family reunion and allowed the late Queen to spend time with her namesake before her death later that year.
In March 2023, Lilibet was christened in a private ceremony at her family’s California home. Shortly afterward, her parents publicly used the title “Princess” for the first time. Following the accession of King Charles III in September 2022, she became entitled to the title as a grandchild of the reigning monarch under longstanding royal rules. The Royal Family’s official website subsequently updated her designation to “Princess Lilibet of Sussex.”
For Lilibet’s fourth birthday in 2025, the occasion was celebrated privately, with the public only getting a glimpse of the day through a series of social media posts shared by her mother, Meghan.
She marked the occasion by sharing four previously unseen photographs of Lilibet, including two black-and-white images of her with her daughter, a photo of the pair cuddling on a boat, a never-before-seen photograph from shortly after Lilibet’s birth, showing Meghan holding her as a newborn and two father-daughter photos featuring Prince Harry, including one with baby Lilibet and another showing him holding her hand as they walked together.
In her birthday message, Meghan wrote:
“Happy birthday to our beautiful girl! Four years ago today she came into our lives — and each day is brighter and better because of it.”
She later posted the Harry photos with the caption:
“The sweetest bond to watch unfold. Daddy’s little girl and favorite adventurer.”
As Princess Lilibet celebrates her fifth birthday, she remains one of the youngest representatives of a new generation of the royal family. While much of her childhood has unfolded away from the public spotlight, interest in her life continues because of her unique position within both the British monarchy and a modern, transatlantic royal family.
