Princess Diana's Repeat Looks Were Packed With Fashion Tricks

Princess Diana is remembered for many things, but her keen sense of style is something that still gets brought up today. She's gone on to influence many of us, even her two daughters-in-law, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, and not to mention the recent Vogue Paris photoshoot starring Hailey Bieber.
What made her so ahead of her time was her willingness to rewear and repurpose clothing she owned, making her a champion of sustainability decades before it was a trend. Here are a number of examples in which Diana gave new life to an already worn item and subsequently reinvented her wardrobe.
First: A jeweled headband
Taking a Saudi suite of sapphires that were supposedly from a watch, Diana had the gems reset into this very '80s-era jeweled headband for an event in Japan in May 1986. Already this look is proving that you can take an item—even jewels—and repurpose them into something else.
The trick: Refashioning it into a choker necklace
Later on, she wore the same banded set of jewels as a choker necklace and paired the look with a stunning strapless dress. This is something that can also easily be done with a ribbon or scarf.
First: A classic pantsuit
When having lunch with her stepmother, Diana wore a classic double-breasted gray pantsuit that included a beautiful ruffled detail on the blazer. You can't really go wrong in a suit as they are timeless and can be worn on many occasions. The extra detail here makes the suit more interesting, but also more recognizable to others.
The trick: Swap out the pants for a skirt
Instead of wearing her unique suit less often, Diana opted to swap out the pants for a simple gray skirt, in turn elevating the look from a serious and very formal look, to one that's a bit more fun and could be worn to a wider range of events. Keep in mind that even if your blazer is unique you can still extend its wear by pairing it with different bottoms to switch it up.
First: Wearing a floral-printed two-piece
Back when Lady Diana Spencer was yet to become a princess, the would-be royal was seen at the 1981 Wimbledon finals wearing a stunning floral two-piece skirt-suit. The colorful outfit is reminiscent of nature and a perfect look for the tennis championships that take place in mid-summer.
The trick: Wearing one of the items on its own
Four years later in 1985, Diana wore the skirt portion of the two-piece to another sporting event, this time a polo match in Cirencester. She proved that by separating any sets you already own, you can get much more life out of your clothes by creating entirely new outfits that feel fresh and updated.Tim Graham/Tim Graham Photo Library/Getty Images
