Princess Diana Would’ve Been ‘The Most Incredible’ Grandma To Prince Harry’s Kids, Royal Family Expert Says

Archie Mountbatten-Windsor is an adorable little tot, and in the photos that have so far been made available to the public, some royal fans have claimed that the little guy bears a striking resemblance to his dad, Prince Harry – as a baby, that is.

Ever since Archie was born in the spring of 2019, his parents, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, have been careful about keeping him away from the public eye as much as possible. While new mothers in Buckingham Palace generally give the public a glimpse of a newborn royal at the Lindo Wing steps at St. Mary’s Hospital the day they are born, Archie’s parents went against royal protocol and did not invite the press for a photo op.

However, the doting parents did give the public the tiniest of glimpses of the royal tot a few days following his birth in an intimate photo shoot at Windsor Castle’s St. Georges Hall. After that, only a few photos from his christening and one uploaded by his mother on the now-inactive Sussex Instagram account were publicly available. It would be another four months before eager royal fans got to see Archie’s full face. While photos of Archie are not easy to come by, he was featured in a trailer for Harry’s docu-series on Apple TV+. The video footage of him and Meghan were a private glimpse into the family’s Montecito, California, life.

Their second child, daughter Lillibet, was born June 4, 2021, and is a happy baby, according to her mom and dad. The Duke and Duchess said that Archie made them parents, but Lillibet made them a family. Yet, in the closeness of the gorgeous little family of four, there remains one missing element – Harry’s mother, Princess Diana.

In many ways, Princess Diana’s legacy lives on in her second-born son Harry. Many royal family observers are quick to note that, of the late princess’s two boys, Harry takes after her more than his older brother, Prince William. Stewart Pearce, former voice coach to Princess Diana, told Us Weekly in May 2021 that Harry reminds him “unquestionably” of the late royal. While acknowledging William followed his mother best in terms of looks, with his “pure features,” including his blue eyes that are similar to Diana’s sapphire blue eyes, Harry had inherited more of her personality.

“But Harry, in terms of his impetuosity (is Diana). Harry, in terms of his intuitive explosions of energy, (is the most like her). I suppose, slightly, William from the external point of view. But Harry from (his) wonderful ebullience (and) passionate (personality embodies his mother). He’s the guy. He loves life. He has fun,” Pearce said.

This similarity between mother and son has led many to believe Harry’s parenting style would echo Diana’s.

Emma Forbes, a British radio and television presenter with ties to the royal family, said in May 2019, prior to Archie’s birth, that Harry would become an “amazing” father.

“Harry’s the one that’s got so much of Diana in him,” she said. “I was actually thinking about that this morning – how tragic it is that she’s not alive because she’d be the most incredible grandmother,” People reported Forbes as saying.

Adding he would likely be a “cool dad,” Forbes said, “Harry will be one of those fathers that gets the balance right between being hands-on and taking adventures. I could so see him traveling with a son at his side.”

It’s likely Harry would agree, in line with the insights into his mother’s parenting style William revealed in the 2017 documentary “Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy.”

“She was very informal and really enjoyed the laughter and the fun,” William said. “She understood that there was a real life outside of palace walls.”

In the same documentary, Harry recalled that Diana “smothered” her sons with love.

“To myself and William, she was just the best mother ever,” Harry said as he reminisced about how Diana would dress him and William in “the most bizarre outfits.”

“I sure as hell am going to dress my kids up the same way,” he joked, adding she was one of the “naughtiest parents.”

Diana tragically passed in a car accident in Paris at the age of 36, when William was 15 and Harry only 12 at the time. In a November 2017 engagement interview, Harry said if his mother were still alive today, she and his wife Meghan would definitely have got on like a house on fire.

“I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know so excited for me, but then, as I said, would have probably been best friends – best friends with Meghan,” Harry said. “So no it’s – you know it is days like – days like today when – when I really miss having her around and miss being able to share the happy news.”

With Harry and Meghan’s royal exit in March 2020, it’s clear they shared similar feelings of disillusionment with life in the public eye as part of the British monarchy that Diana faced as well. Like her, Harry, too, was unafraid to break with royal convention to do what he felt was best for his family and relocate to the United States.
