Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew married in 1981 however scandal hit the duke and duchess in 1992 when Fergie was photographed with another man. However, as the Duchess of York writes in her autobiography, the late Princess Diana’s own scandal saved Fergie’s.

Although Sarah and Andrew finalized their divorce in 1996, the years leading up to their split were not pretty. In her autobiography, “My Story,” the Duchess describes how Diana rescued her from being torn apart by the press. Sarah had gone on a secret vacation with her businessman John Bryan.

The two were photographed lounging in the sun while John kissed Sarah’s feet. However, instead of the photographs of her and John being splashed around front pages in the following days, Diana’s own private conversations with a male friend had been leaked.

“On Sunday, my getaway day, the tabloids carried a fresh scandal. Diana’s so-called ‘Squidgy’ tape – 20 minutes of a phone chat with a male friend. I wasn’t the only one being spied on, that much was clear,” Sarah wrote.

However, Diana’s scandal only helped delay the scrutiny Sarah received from the press and the royal family. “I swallowed half a Valium, the only time I ever took it in my life. Then I flew back with my daughters to London, with no clue as to what the next day would bring,” Sarah said. She also revealed that she hid away from the rest of the royal family trying to avoid the queen who was “furious” according to Sarah.

“I went and found the one woman who understood what it meant to marry into the Royal Family, and how hard it was to measure up. I went up to Diana’s bedroom and sat with my friend. Sarah said that she thanked Diana for taking her off the front page, “it was our private rueful joke.”
