Princess Diana's Makeup Artist Convinced Her To Ditch Blue Eyeliner Makeup

Princess Diana was not only one of the most fashionable royal family members but the former Princess of Wales was a style icon in her own right. This is evident even today, as she continues to stay influential in fashion circles. One trend that became Lady Di's own was her signature electric blue eyeliner.

However, only a few years ago her former makeup artist, Mary Greenwell, explained the simple reason why Diana stopped wearing it –– Greenwell had told her that warm colors like beige and brown are simply prettier.

Speaking with Yahoo, Greenwell explained that Diana "Was someone who was in the public eye presenting herself all the time to the public. It isn't particularly appropriate to go on changing your look every five seconds. She did change her makeup a bit. It's just that it wasn't changed dramatically. I think dramatic change is not really something for somebody who's in the White House or in office or in a royal family, as it's just not really appropriate."

Despite Greenwell's suggestion that Diana shouldn't change her look often, the former princess nevertheless managed to keep things fresh and was heralded as a style icon, from her early days as a royal to even over 20 years after her death.

Speaking of the blue eyeliner specifically, Greenwell stated in the same interview with Yahoo that she told Diana: "I think beiges and browns are just so much prettier. Simple as that." The princess took the advice of her trusted makeup artist and the blue eyeliner was dropped in lieu of softer shades that eventually became her signature aesthetic.

Greenwell further discussed Diana's look:

"She felt no need to be showy, so she kept her makeup subtle and appropriate for the occasion. She loved to exaggerate her gorgeous eyes and wear loads of mascara."

Princess Diana was also no stranger to experimenting with makeup herself, with Greenwell explaining: "She loved makeup and loved experimenting. It wasn't to the point of going from green eyeshadow to blue eyeshadow, but just experimenting with ways to bring her eyes out more. It was just much more about really getting her to look absolutely beautiful all the time."

Diana and her makeup artist clearly shared a special bond beyond their professional relationship. On the 20th anniversary of Diana's death, Greenwell shared a touching photo of them, alongside Diana's hairdresser Sam McKnight, on Instagram and wrote:

"It is twenty years today since the untimely death of #PrincesDiana [sic] I am so blessed to have spent so much time with this extraordinary lady who helped change the attitude to #HIV among other things. Her beauty and sincerity touched us all." In the Yahoo interview she also described the princess as "charming, delightful, and friendly."
