Princess Diana's former butler shared his opinion about Harry and Meghan's decision to split their time between the Prince’s native the United Kingdom and North America.

The new year started off with shocking news for the Royal Family. On January 8, 2020, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle announced that they “intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and “work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”

Since their announcement, multiple friends and family members stepped up to defend the couple’s decision. One of them being Paul Burrell, the former butler of Harry’s mother, Princess Diana. As Diana’s butler, Paul spent years by her side and became a person she could trust and confide in.

In an interview with Us Weekly, Paul Burrell revealed how he feels about Harry’s decision to step back as a member of the Royal Family to protect his family from a life in the spotlight:

“Harry's been unhappy in the royal family for years. I doubt he'll miss being a royal. Yes, he was born a prince, but his long-term ambition is to be known as a humanitarian, like his mother.”

When Burrell was asked about what Princess Diana would have said about Harry and Meghan’s plans, he told Inside Edition

“She would embrace Meghan and Harry and tell them: Do your thing – Do what makes you happy.”

Speaking with Good Morning Britain, Paul Burrell revealed Diana would have shown understanding for the difficulties Harry and Meghan are facing, for she had felt the same way back then:

"Clearly, Harry and Meghan are not happy in the environment that they're in, being stifled by the royal household...you marry the entire household as well. Diana found that impossible."

Paul Burrell’s biggest concern, however, is the relationship between Harry and his brother, which is starting to crumble:

"I do feel sorry for William and Harry not having that bond that they once had, obviously when their mother died they were cemented together and inseparable. And their mother would be sad too."
