In a resurfaced video from 1991, Princess Diana is seen participating in a moms’ race at her son Prince Harry’s school for sports day. She was dressed in a skirt and ran barefoot

Princess Diana may have passed away more than two decades ago in a tragic car accident, but she remains one of the most iconic members of the Royal Family throughout history. Even if you did not agree with some of her actions and choices, she was a truly unique woman who managed to always stand out in a crowd.

Even though Princess Diana had a lot of her time taken up by her royal duties, she was still able to remain a loving mother to Harry and William, her two sons.  Proof of how dedicated she was to Prince William and Prince Harry can be seen in a resurfaced video from the early nineties.

The old video resurfaced back in April this year shows Princess Diana racing against other moms at a sports day. The royal was seen dressed in a skirt and looked competitive as she ran barefoot. According to Harper’s Bazaar, the throwback video was posted by Twitter account @OregonProgress.

PopSugar explains that the race was held for the annual sports day in Wetherby School, the pre-prep school attended by both Prince William and Harry. Schools in England would traditionally organize a race for their students’ parents at the end of the event.

Harper’s Bazaar added that Prince Harry himself had taken part in a race for the sports day. He was in a sack race, and photos showed him inside a potato sack jumping to the finishing line. He was seven years old at the time.

Sporting events and playing outside are things that Princess Diana enjoyed since her childhood, and this love continued until her death in 1997. The title of Princess can be daunting to have attached to her name, but Diana still lived her life without concern for the many prying eyes watching her every move. One of her favorite things to do was to spend as much time as she possibly could with her sons Harry and William, as History Extra details.

Diana was known for being the fun parent as she was pictured with Harry and William at theme parks and on roller coaster rides. However, Diana really wanted to give the princes a taste of normal life. During an interview that Prince William had with ABC News, he said:

“She very much wanted to get us to see the rawness of real life. And I can't thank her enough for that, 'cause reality bites in a big way, and it was one of the biggest lessons I learned is, just how lucky and privileged so many of us are — particularly myself.”

Participating in your child’s sports day and bringing your sons to theme parks is very unlike that of a royal. One other thing the late Princess did in breaking “royal protocol” was to take William and Harry to McDonald’s on the weekends.

According to mom.com, Darren McGrady former chef for the royal family told Marie Claire that she would often take the boys to the American fast-food restaurant.

"I remember the princess came into the kitchen one day and said, 'Cancel lunch for the boys I'm taking them out, we're going to McDonald's,'" McGrady shared. "And I said, 'Oh my God -- your Royal Highness, I can do that, I can do burgers.' And she said, 'No, it's the toy they want.'"

Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell confirmed McGrady’s story, and called it the royals’ "Saturday night ritual."

"The three of them would nip to McDonald’s for a Big Mac and fries before coming back to watch Blind Date," Burrell told Mirror UK. "All three of them would squat on this massive, stuffed hippopotamus Diana had in her sitting room. They loved Blind Date and I’d hear them all screaming things like 'Oh don’t pick him!'"

William and Harry have paid tribute to Diana over the years.

Her firstborn opened up about the things his mom missed out on. “I would like to have had her advice,” William told British GQ in 2017.

“I would like to have had her advice. I would love her to have met Catherine and to have seen the children grow up and to have seen the children grow up. It makes me sad that she won’t, that they will never know her.”

In September 2019, Harry retraced his mother’s footsteps as he walked down an old minefield. Diana had famously walked through a partially cleared Angolan minefield back in 1997.
