Princess Charlotte’s Blue Wimbledon Dress Echoes One of Princess Diana’s Most Memorable Looks

Princess Charlotte brought a bright touch of royal style to the Wimbledon men’s singles final on July 12, 2026, attending the match with the Prince and Princess of Wales and her elder brother, Prince George.

The family watched from the Royal Box as defending champion Jannik Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-4. According to the official Wimbledon match report, the contest lasted three hours and 46 minutes, with Sinner recovering after losing the opening set to retain his title.

Charlotte, 11, wore a bespoke blue midi dress by British designer Jenny Packham. Its fitted waist, softly flared skirt and layered butterfly-style sleeves created an elegant look suited to a summer afternoon at Centre Court. Her half-up hairstyle and understated accessories kept the focus on the dress’s vivid color and distinctive ruffles.

The design prompted comparisons with a pale-blue Bruce Oldfield gown worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, during the 1983 royal tour of Australia. Diana appeared in the dramatic evening dress at a gala dinner and dance at Sydney’s Wentworth Hotel on March 28, 1983.

Although Charlotte’s midi dress was lighter and more contemporary, both garments featured a blue palette and eye-catching layers around the shoulders. The resemblance offered a striking fashion parallel, but there is no public confirmation that Charlotte’s outfit was intended as a direct tribute to her late grandmother.

Diana’s Bruce Oldfield gown remains one of the defining formal looks from her early years as Princess of Wales. Archival photographs from the event show the pale-blue design with shimmering silver details and cascading ruffles extending from the shoulders toward the floor. A broad silver belt emphasized the waist and added structure to the flowing silhouette.

Diana completed the ensemble with silver accessories and the Spencer family tiara. The diamond headpiece carried special significance because she had also worn it for her wedding to the then Prince of Wales on July 29, 1981.

Charlotte’s Wimbledon dress interpreted similar visual elements in a far less formal way. Its shorter length, neat waist and fluttering sleeves suited both her age and the daytime setting. Rather than copying Diana’s gown, the outfit appeared to echo its most recognizable details through a modern royal wardrobe.

The connection also felt meaningful because Prince William has spoken about keeping his mother’s memory alive for his children. In the 2017 documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, he explained that photographs of Diana were displayed in the family home.

“We've got more photos up around the house now of her, and we talk about her a bit. It’s hard because obviously Catherine didn’t know her, so she cannot really provide that level of detail,” William said.

He also described speaking about Diana while putting George and Charlotte to bed: “I regularly put George and Charlotte to bed, talk about her, and just try to remind them that there are two grandmothers – there were two grandmothers – in their lives. So it’s important that they know who she was and that she existed.”

Whether intentional or coincidental, Charlotte’s blue dress created a graceful link between royal generations and showed how classic fashion details can acquire new meaning over time.

The Wimbledon result and match duration are confirmed by the tournament’s official report, while the family’s attendance is independently supported by Associated Press coverage. Diana’s dress, designer and appearance at the Wentworth Hotel on March 28, 1983, are documented in contemporary archival photography.
