Princess Catherine’s Response After Being Mistaken For Prince William’s Assistant Left Fans In Stitches

Still, that doesn’t mean that they’re immune to the occasional faux pas from people they meet during royal engagements. One public encounter that came to light proved that, surprisingly, even royals are sometimes mistaken for staff. However, few handle it with the wit and charm of Catherine, the Princess of Wales.

During an engagement in Scotland, the ever-graceful Catherine reminded us all that she’s as quick with a comeback as she is calm and endearing. Fans and royal watchers have been relishing her highly anticipated return to the public eye and royal engagements, and Catherine, 43, has not disappointed. If anything, the mom-of-three is better than ever before, and many were fascinated by the Prince of Wales’ retelling of an incident that proved just how incredible his wife is.

Prince William recalled that in 2020, while visiting a local charity, the Princess found herself in an amusing situation when someone in the crowd assumed she was merely accompanying the future king in an assistant’s capacity. Many were shocked to know that Catherine could ever be mistaken for Prince William’s assistant. Prince William himself recounted the moment at a community event in Scotland, where the couple was making the rounds to support a range of local causes in August 2020. According to William, the exchange left them both in stitches and reminded everyone in attendance of Princess Catherine’s down-to-earth humor and warmth. Prince William recalled being at Shire Hall Care Home in Cardiff, Wales, and at one point, asking a resident named Joan Drew-Smith:

“We have to wear masks because of the virus, but it’s difficult to hear sometimes when you can’t see someone’s mouth,” he said.

Unwittingly, Joan pointed to the then Duchess of Cambridge and asked:

“Is that your assistant?”

Catherine had the most hilarious reaction to this case of mistaken identity, placing a hand on her husband's shoulder and joking with Prince William:

“Well I am your assistant! I have been for a long time!” 

Later during the visit, Prince William remarked to staff at the facility:

“I love Joan, she’s brilliant. If only everyone was as honest as her.”

This lighthearted misidentification came as part of a whirlwind set of appearances by the royal couple, who continue to champion mental health, early childhood development, and community outreach as cornerstones of their public service. But it’s these unscripted, candid moments that warm the public towards them. In the past, Princess Catherine has received some of the most hilarious responses to questions about her identity after marrying Prince William. At one point, she was interacting with young students at Burghead Primary School in Moray, Scotland, in November 2023, and when one of the children asked who she was, she responded:

“Who am I? I’m married to William.”
