The Princess of Wales’ triumphant return to the public eye continues, with Catherine stepping out for royal engagements in style. The royal family commemorated the 2025 VE Day celebrations at Buckingham Palace in London on May 8, standing out in their formal and classic attire. As part of the big day’s many festivities, the royals attended a thanksgiving service at Westminster Abbey, with Prince William and Catherine standing out.

While the Prince of Wales donned his military attire, Catherine stood out in a polka-dot dress reminiscent of the one she wore nearly three years ago when she made her debut at the Royal Ascot horse races. The stylish polka dress had a high neckline and cinched cuffs. The dress reminded royal fans of one of the many dresses made famous by the late Princess of Wales, Princess Diana. Over the years, the wives of Princess Diana’s two sons have paid homage to their mother-in-law through their fashion choices. Although her style can never be mimicked, Meghan Markle and Catherine have tastefully followed in the fashion footsteps of their iconic mother-in-law.

However, it wasn’t just the polka-dot patterned dress by Alessandra Rich that was reminiscent of Princess Diana. Catherine also wore a pair of pearl drop earrings that previously belonged to her late mother-in-law. The earrings had been gifted to Princess Diana before her wedding to Prince Charles in 1981 by London-based jeweler Collingwood. She completed the look with a chic hat by Juliette Botterill and brown shoes with a matching brown bag.

Princess Diana is still considered a true style icon for women worldwide and those in the royal family. Although Princess Catherine had never met her mother-in-law, as she passed away in 1997, it’s clear she is strongly influenced by her, especially sartorially. With her signature coiffed hair, appreciation of bright patterns, admiration for creative necklaces, and ability to make any dress look classy, everyone can agree that Princess Diana was a fashion icon.

Many publications, such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Elle and similar magazines, covered the People’s Princess’s often daring fashion choices in detail while she was still alive. And even decades later, she is still regarded as one of the big fashion icons and style legends of the 20th century. Diana’s simple yet elegant style has inspired countless people. Other prominent, younger members of the royal family are still regularly compared to her, such as her daughter-in-law, Catherine.

The Princess of Wales has been a favorite among royal fans since she married Prince William in 2011. After their wedding, she gracefully took on the role of a senior member of the royal family, and one of the things she is best known for is her impeccable sense of style. From coat dresses to skirt suits, she has added her signature style to every outfit she chooses.

She has inspired countless women worldwide to follow in her footsteps and follow a sensible and modest style that is also powerful and classy. Catherine has perfectly bridged the gap of her signature fashion sense with royal dressing rules as she prepares to become Queen Consort one day.

Over the years, members of the royal family have attended the Royal Ascot horse races. In 2022, the multi-day event was spread over five days with hundreds of people in attendance. Amongst the race watchers were the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The powerful couple attended the fourth day of the event. Prince William and Catherine led the royal family in a traditional carriage procession that traveled along the famous race track before beginning the races.

The crowd was happy to see the royal family at the races. However, people were also excited to see Catherine wearing an iconic dress that paid tribute to her mother-in-law. She was dressed in a polka-dot dress that resembled the same dress her mother-in-law wore many years prior. In 1986, Princess Diana wore a dress similar to another race event, the Epsom Derby. She also wore a polka-dot dress in 1988 to the Royal Ascot horse races.

Not only did Catherine dress like her late mother-in-law, but she also wore Diana’s earrings. The beautiful South-Sea pearl earrings were worn by Diana many times at different public appearances, such as in 1992 in Budapest for the English National Ballet Gala Performance. After her passing, her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, received their mother’s jewelry collection, according to People

The 2022 races were not the first time the Princess of Wales has worn polka dots. She was spotted in the style in 2017 at Wimbledon. Vogue reported that this polka-dot look also paid tribute to the movie, “Pretty Woman,” released in 1990.

The Princess of Wales has already proven to be a great asset to the royal family. As Page Six reported, “The Diana Chronicles” author Tina Brown said the future of the British kingdom is now resting on the “slim shoulders” of Catherine. She remains true to herself while she makes way for the possibility of becoming the Queen Consort in the next decade or two.

Anthony McGrath, a celebrity stylist and lecturer at the Fashion Retail Academy in London, explained to Harper’s Bazaar how Catherine’s style has changed over the years and how she’s expertly integrated her style with the fashion rules she's expected to follow as a member of the royal family. On her pre-royal style, McGrath said:

“Since Kate has been in the limelight she has always been somewhat of a conservative dresser, whether that was because she wanted to prove herself to the Royal Family or was her own personal style, who knows, but she was rarely seen in anything too risqué. However, since marrying Prince William and officially becoming a member of the Royal Family, her outfits have certainly become more modest ... She had to leave behind the flirty and floaty dress, thigh-skimming minis and low-cut evening gowns.”

For the 2025 VE Day event, Catherine's choice of dress paid homage to the women who came before her.

Managing director and co-founder of 77 Diamonds, Tobias Kormind, described her outfit as “reminiscent of Princess Diana” and added Catherine “chose to accessorise with pearls and opted for her Collingwood Pearl and Diamond drop earrings. These were gifted to the late Princess as a present by Collingwood, a jewellery firm favoured by the Spencers, and became a mainstay in her jewellery collection.”

“They have been a fast favourite of both princesses who have often paired them with the pearl and diamond Lover's Knot tiara,” Kormind said, adding, “The earrings were also fitting, keeping in mind the solemn nature of the occasion – pearls signify sorrow and grief, and this jewel was also worn by the Princess on Remembrance Sunday in 2021, tying together the two sombre occasions.”
