Princess Catherine Makes a Striking Return to Baftas After Three-Year Absence

Feb 25, 2026 by apost team

For the first time in three years, Princess Catherine, the Princess of Wales, returned to the BAFTAs, stepping onto the red carpet at London’s Royal Festival Hall alongside Prince William. After a period marked by her cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery, her presence carried more weight than just fashion headlines.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts ceremony, often described as Britain’s answer to the Oscars, welcomed a roster of A-list nominees including Leonardo DiCaprio, Paul Mescal, Jessie Buckley and Timothée Chalamet. But when William and Catherine arrived about half an hour before the ceremony began, the focus subtly shifted.

The red carpet went into lockdown for a brief period ahead of their entrance. When they appeared, it was business as usual on the surface. Smiles, poised waves, a steady walk into the hall. Yet for many royal watchers, the moment felt symbolic. Catherine had last attended in 2023, wearing a reworked white Alexander McQueen gown paired with striking black opera gloves. This year, she opted for another archival favorite.

The Princess wore a blush pink and white Gucci gown that she previously debuted in 2019 at the V&A Museum. The dress featured a soft mauve palette, a cinched waist, a shoulder-grazing V-neck bodice and a flowing skirt. She paired it with a burgundy velvet clutch that echoed the waist detailing and sleek heels, while William complemented her look in a maroon jacket.

Their appearance came during a week when the royal family had been in headlines following the arrest of William’s uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. Still, inside the hall, the couple mingled with guests, including Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale. When William was introduced as President of BAFTA, cheers rang out, underscoring that his role remains firmly intact.

Though Prince William and Princess Catherine’s BAFTA red carpet display was polished, some observers noted subtle shifts beneath the surface. Body language expert Judi James told HELLO! that while the couple projected “their usual, impeccable red carpet A-list glamour,” there were hints of strain. She said:

“William and Kate delivered their usual, impeccable red carpet A-list glamour here, but there are a handful of tells that might reflect the undeniable tensions of the past week.”

According to James, “William’s lips are pulled inward, and his brows pulled into a small frown, suggesting some anxiety… Kate’s smiles are as impeccable as usual, although there is a very slight edge-to-edge placing of the teeth, which again could signal inner tension.” Inside the ceremony, the couple settled into their seats without the sweeping hush that had marked previous arrivals. Many guests only realized they were present as they moved through the aisle, prompting a quiet buzz in the auditorium.

The evening’s emotional tone surfaced when the couple discussed the BAFTA Best Picture nominee “Hamnet,” a film about the death of Shakespeare’s son and the grief of his parents. When asked whether he had seen it, William admitted, “I need to be in quite a calm state, and I am not at the moment. I will save it.” Princess Catherine added with a laugh, “I thought it was a bad idea, actually. Ended up with very puffy eyes. It was so beautifully shot. The music as well. The score is fantastic.”
