Princess Catherine Kisses Prince William at Polo and the Photos Are a Reminder That This Is Still Very Much a Love Story

On a warm Friday afternoon at Guards Polo Club in Windsor, Catherine, Princess of Wales, did something that had the cameras — and the crowd — paying very close attention. She kissed her husband.

It sounds simple. For royals, it is not.

On July 10, 2026, Catherine attended the Audi X Royal Charity Polo Cup alongside William as he played in the charity match. She wore a black-and-white gingham check midi dress by Temperley London, a wide-brimmed straw sun hat, and nude heeled sandals — a look that was casual and confident, exactly right for a sunny afternoon at a polo ground. When William's team won, she walked onto the field to congratulate him. She put her hand on his back. She kissed him on the cheek. As they walked off the field together, they held hands.

The photographs circulated immediately. For a couple who typically reserve visible affection for the most private of moments — a stolen kiss at a forest retreat, a hand held during a medical announcement, a beach walk with their children — the polo ground display was, by royal standards, unusually open.

It was also, for those following the Wales' story closely, entirely in keeping with a shift that has been building since Catherine's cancer treatment. Royal expert and biographer Ingrid Seward, speaking to PEOPLE, had noted the change directly. "They are happy for people to see them be touchy-feely," she said. "They're in a different phase of their life now. William is very protective and very proud of her for coming through this and carrying on with her life."

The polo kiss was the latest expression of that phase — visible, natural, and entirely unrehearsed.

Catherine's attendance at the Royal Charity Polo Cup marked her return to the annual event after missing it for two consecutive years — 2024 and 2025 — during her cancer treatment and recovery. Her presence on the sidelines was warmly noted. Her presence in the photographs that followed was even warmer.

Royal etiquette expert Myka Meier, founder and director of Beaumont Etiquette, has explained the unwritten code around royal PDA to PEOPLE on several occasions. "Senior members of the royal family would likely not be told how to interact or when they can or cannot show PDA and would be trusted to use their better judgment as to when it's appropriate," she said. "The royals often adjust PDA to mirror the formality of the event they are attending." At a polo ground, in the sunshine, after a charity match win — the formality is low and the joy is high.

The polo outing was the start of what became a busy and affectionate weekend for the couple. The following day, July 11, they attended the Wimbledon women's singles final together — where William was photographed helping Catherine with her hat as they arrived, adjusting it gently and exchanging a smile before they took their seats. On July 13, they returned for the men's final with George and Charlotte, the four of them together in the Royal Box for one of the most photographed family outings of the summer.

The kiss on the polo field was a single moment in a weekend of many. But it was the one that stopped the cameras — and reminded anyone watching that after everything the past two years had brought, this was still very much a love story.
