After months of waiting, Princess Beatrice of York and her fiancé Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi have finally settled on a date to tie the knot: Friday, May 29! The couple will be saying their vows in the Chapel Royal of St James’s Palace in London.

According to Express, Beatrice has chosen this venue because her nephews, Prince George and Prince Louis were christened in this chapel. She thought this would be a great way to pay tribute to Kate and William, whom both she is very fond of.

Beatrice’s admiration for her cousin Prince William has always been apparent, so this was the perfect venue to celebrate her wedding. Fun fact: Beatrice was also christened in this very chapel as a baby!

Royal seal of approval

What makes things even grander is the Queen offering up the venue to the couple in the first place. According to a statement released by the Palace, she has even agreed to let the reception take place in none other than the regal gardens of Buckingham Palace. The statement said:

“Her Majesty The Queen has kindly given permission for the ceremony to take place at The Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace.

It follows, “The ceremony will be followed by a private reception, given by The Queen, in the gardens of Buckingham Palace.”

It’s been nine years since a royal wedding reception took place at the palace – the last being the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate.

Grand shoes to fill?

This announcement has caused some suspicion that Beatrice and Edoardo might be stepping up to fill the gap left by Prince Harry and Megan Markle, as the wedding was initially expected to be low-key. Though this would not be all that surprising especially since Beatrice’s father Prince Andrew is already retired.

In an interview with Hello! Magazine, the Crown’s royal historian said, “It’s quite clear that one of the consequences is that Beatrice and Eugenie will now be brought forward – if they’re willing to be brought forward.”

On receiving royal Dukedoms

After Princess Beatrice gets married, however, her current title would remain – even if she does step up to fulfill bigger royal duties. It is tradition that only the sons and grandsons of the monarch receive royal Dukedoms.

The Queen offers titles to members of her family after they marry. For example, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle became the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Beatrice’s younger sister, Princess Eugenie, didn’t receive a new title when she got married in 2019. She isn’t eligible to inherit her father’s Dukedom of York either.

However, the Queen could always make an exception, if Beatrice or Eugenie decide to become a full-time working royal.

Currently, Beatrice is vice-president of partnerships and strategy at Afiniti, an American software company where she focuses on client development. Her salary is undisclosed.
